Through open platforms for exchange and collaboration, their website serves to encourage and expand the communities around these practices. Their programs, many of which happen online, include commissions, exhibitions, events, discussion, archives and portfolios. They support artists working at the furthest reaches of technological experimentation as well as those responding to the broader aesthetic and political implications of new tools and media. Their organizational voice draws attention to artists, their work, their perspectives and the complex interrelationships between technology, art and culture.

Announcing the 1st Annual Library Photo Contest: Science on Campus

The Library is sponsoring a photo contest! Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students may participate and each student may submit up to three photos electronically. The theme for this first contest is “Science on Campus.�? Photographers may interpret that in any way they like, but must explain how the theme applies to their photograph. Submissions will be accepted from Feb. 1-Feb. 22. The top three photographs will be printed and displayed in the Shapiro Science Library and the three top winners will receive prizes. The Faculty Exploratory is a program as well as a facility. It was designed specifically for faculty at the University of Michigan to enhance lecturing, research and publishing skills. Whether you already use technology and just need a few tips or are just starting out and need a whole new skill set, you can take hands-on workshops, setup an appointment, or just stop in and say, HELP! Help during Google Digitization

Just a reminder that the Library Google Digitization project is now underway at the Art, Architecture and Engineering Library. Unfortunately this may cause some inconvenience for your and your students. Here are some tips that can help you out during this process:

1. You can check to see what books are currently being digitized here: http://www.lib.umich.edu/aael/article.php?articleID=291

2. If a book is out for digitization you can recall it by following the steps listed here: http://www.lib.umich.edu/aael/article.php?articleID=87

3. There are many art books available in the Fine Arts Library on Central Campus. Here is a link to their website: http://www.lib.umich.edu/finearts/

4. Library-to-Library deliveries will continue as usual. If a second copy of your book is available elsewhere on campus, use the recall method above to have it delivered to the AAEL.

5. Interlibrary loan service is also available. The average time for ILL delivery is 5-7 days. Information and request forms are here:

6. If you are planning an assignment and need particular books that have yet to be digitized, please let me know and we can arrange to have them digitized at a more convenient time.

7. Current journals are not included in the project. These will still be available in the library.

iGoogle Library Gadget

If you use Google's web portal, iGoogle, you can now add a University of Michigan Library search box to your page. The gadget lets users search Mirlyn, Search Tools, and the library web site as well as provides a link to the Ask Us service. This hands-on workshop will present an overview of online and human resources at UM that can assist you in getting research grants. University members have online access to resources that list and describe thousands of current funding opportunities from the Federal Government, Foundations, Professional Societies, and other sources. We will discuss and demonstrate the various web-based funding databases currently available, how to develop search strategies, establishing email alerts for new grants, and how to navigate university policies and timelines for grant-getting.

AAE Library gets Googlized

As you are probably aware, the University of Michigan Library is in the
midst of a massive digitization project in cooperation with Google, in which
most bound volumes in the library system will be scanned. As a result of
this project, all books not restricted by copyright will be available in
full text in Mirlyn and in Google Book Search. Books restricted by
copyright can still be searched for key words. More information on the
Michigan Digitization Project can be found here:

As part of the Michigan Digitization Project, I am happy to announce that
the Art Architecture & Engineering Library will be the next library to
participate. On October 22nd Google will begin digitizing the books in our
collection. Several ranges of books will be removed for two weeks for
scanning. When these book return, another group will go out for scanning
until the entire circulating collection is scanned. I apologize in advance
for any inconvenience caused by the absence of our books during this period.

The following information may help to ease any inconvenience for this
period:

- Holds can be placed on all materials removed for digitization. Just log
into Mirlyn, search for the book, go to the location screen and hit 'Get
This'. The book will be held for you at the AAE Library circulation desk
for use when it returns.

- Library-to-library deliveries will continue as usual. If a second copy of
your book is elsewhere on campus, use the method above to have it delivered
to the AAE Library.

- Interlibrary loan service is also available. The average time for ILL

Risks, Rights and Responsibilities: Current Copyright Issues for Academics

The University Library is pleased to bring together two local intellectual
property experts to share their insights about the copyright issues facing
today’s academics. Jack Bernard, assistant general counsel with the U-M’s
Office of the General Counsel, and an adjunct professor in the School of
Law, the School of Information, and the School of Public Policy, will
discuss strategies for being a responsible copyright holder in a time of
increasing limitations on rights and access. Jessica Litman, Professor of
Law at the University of Michigan and author of the book Digital Copyright,
will speak about the copyright related opportunities and pitfalls afforded
to academics by the Internet.

With an introduction by Paul Courant, University Librarian and Harold T.
Shapiro Collegiate Professor of Public Policy in the Gerald R. Ford School
of Public Policy.

Anthony Lee is Associate Professor of Art History at Mount Holyoke College and a leading scholar of American Studies, visual culture studies, and the history of art. His publications include Painting on the Left: Diego Rivera, Radical Politics, and San Francisco’s Public Murals (California, 1999), Diane Arbus: Family Albums (Yale, 2003), and the award-winning Picturing Chinatown: Art and Orientalism in San Francisco (California, 2001). He is also the editor of a groundbreaking University of California Press series on photography in the US. His lecture will be drawn from his ongoing work on the social history of Asian America and the photographic history of its representation.

Adding your ARTstor image groups to CTOOLS

Many A&D faculty members are using ARTstor to gather and show images to their classes. Listed below are the steps to add ARTstor image groups to a CTOOLS site. If you would like further assistance with ARTstor or CTOOLS I am happy to assist you.

Adding your ARTstor image groups to CTOOLS

IN ARTSTOR
1. Go to ARTstor http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/V?func=native-link&resource=UMI02915
and log in
2. Go to image groups
3. Open a group
4. Go to image groups again
5. Select Display Image Group URL
6. Click once on the URL so that the entire URL is highlighted (is is a long URL and scrolls past the text box).
7. Type C to copy the URL
Now the URL can be added as a resource in CTOOLS

IN CTOOLS
1. Go to http://ctools.umich.edu and log in
2. Go to your course site
3. Go to Resources
4. Click on "add" and select "add web links (URLs)"
5. Paste the ARTstor URL into the URL text box
6. Select email notification if desired
7. Click "Add Links Now" button
