Summer Language Institute Scholarships, Monday, March 31 (but scholarships are available until filled)
Spring and Summer Term offerings include a unique collection of intensive language courses that provide students the opportunity to rapidly increase their level of fluency. Intensive courses condense one or two terms of language study into an eight-or ten-week format; they provide an excellent means for students to prepare for a study, internship, or work abroad experience, graduate school, or for expanded career opportunities.

Coordinated by the Summer Language Institute, these courses are taught by U-M instructors and listed in the Schedule of Courses by the following participating departments: Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, Department of Classical Studies, Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, Department of Near Eastern Studies, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the English Language Institute.

Language teaching at the U-M is proficiency-oriented and aims to develop four basic skills: speaking, reading, writing, and aural comprehension. Courses are designed to teach language within a cultural and social context, so that students deepen their knowledge of the relevant country as they develop language skills. In-class coursework is supplemented by cultural activities and computerized learning modules in the Language Resource Center. Enthusiastic class participation is expected. Placement tests are often required for second year or higher courses (200 level and above) if prior language study was done outside the U-M.

During the Spring and Summer terms, a Program Fee Option is available to students who wish to take a language course on a Not-For-Credit basis. This option is particularly attractive for graduate students. Undergraduate students should consult with their academic advisor before choosing this option. For more information, please refer to the Program Fee information page for details.

Fellowships: A limited number of modest fellowships are available through the SLI. Students applying for the Program Fee option as well as those taking a course for credit are eligible to apply. Each fellowship application submitted to the SLI will be reviewed individually.

Fellowships awarded by the SLI are usually limited to partial support payable towards tuition or the program fee. Students are encouraged to view this only as supplemental support and are encouraged to apply to their schools Financial Aid Office for traditional sources of financial aid available for summer study. Graduate students should also seek assistance from their department and/or Rackham.

To be considered for a fellowship, fill out the SLI application and the Fellowship Application Form attached to it. Both applications may be download as a set from this web site

Deadline: March 31, 2008*

* Applications will be accepted beyond the deadline if space remains available, however fellowship funds will not likely be available to late applicants.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to apply ahead of the deadline. This allows us to notify applicants of admission and fellowship decisions in a timely manner and reduces the chance a course may be cancelled due to low enrollment numbers. Courses with low enrollments may be cancelled as early as four weeks prior to the start of the term for which they were scheduled.

U-M students who are considering applying after the March 31st deadline should check course availability on Wolverine Access. Students applying past deadline for an Asian language course should check with the SLI Coordinator first to see if space is still available. Potential guest applicants should contact the SLI Coordinator by E-mail at: um.sli@umich.edu.

Winston Churchill Scholarship Information Session, Friday, April 11 from 5-6p.m., 1330 Haven Hall (LSA Honors Office)
On April 8, Peter Patrikis, Executive Director, The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States, will be on campus to talk with students, faculty and advisors about the Churchill Scholarship which provides one year of graduate study at Churchill College, Cambridge for students in mathematics, natural science, or engineering. There are only 13 of these fellowships each year and UM had back-to-back winners in 2005-06 and 2006-07, so we have a very good track record with this award. We would like to broaden awareness and interest in the award to departments and programs from whom we seldom receive applications and to remind faculty and advisors in departments whose students have received the award how exceptional this opportunity is.
Students are invited to come for a 5:00-6:00 pm session.
