Advising Tip: Grade Questions, Advising During the Break, Etc.

You’ve made it!

Congratulations on surviving Fall 2006. Here are some tips on

Seeing your Fall Grades
Grade Concerns
Advising During and After Finals
Registering after Finals

Seeing your Fall Grades
LSA requires that faculty file grades for a course no later than seventy-two hours after the course’s scheduled final, and most faculty meet the deadline. So you can reasonably expect your grades will appear on your transcript no later than December 26.

To see your grades, go to Wolverine Access. Click on “Student Business,” and then go to “Transcripts." Since you have your transcript open, you should also check to check that grades from previous semesters and your AP exams, etc. Email your advisor if you have concerns.

If not all your grades for Fall 2006 appear on your transcript sometime around December 26th, don’t panic. Occasionally, instructors miss their deadlines. Give your instructor until January 3rd or so to catch up, but after that, if there is a missing grade for one of your courses, email your instructor: be polite and just point out that the grade is missing.

Grade Concerns
What should you do if you have questions or concerns about a grade for a course? Email your instructor and ask to meet to discuss the grade. Again, be polite. Instructors want their grades to be accurate and fair just as much as students do. Most will be glad to explain how they determined a grade and will be happy to clear up a mistake. After you meet with the instructor and if you’re not satisfied with her/his explanation of your grade, make an appointment with your advisor to discuss the situation.

Advising During and After Finals
Most advisors will be working at least through December 22nd, and the Advising Center will be open through December 22nd but closed from December 23rd through January 1st. On or before December 22, phone appointments are possible if you’re not near Ann Arbor during the break, or you can schedule an appointment for when you get back. Call 764-0332 to make an appointment. Also, you can email ask.lsa.advising@umich.edu if your advisor isn’t responding to email during the break.

Registering after Finals
Remember that throughout December and during the first few weeks of January, students are changing their Winter course schedules. Therefore, if a course you wanted was closed when you registered, it will pay to monitor Wolverine Access during the break to see if someone has dropped and a seat has opened.

Have a terrific break. We’ll see you in January!
