Welcome Week 2007
Welcome or welcome back! I hope that you’re settling into your new digs and that Welcome Week is great. Here are a few suggestions and reminders for just before and after the start of classes.
First, while we advisors are busy most of this week with orientation for students who weren’t able to get here earlier in the summer, we’re answering email. So email your advisor if you have any questions, and if you do want to see your advisor toward the end of this week or early next week, call 764-0332 to schedule an appointment.
Second, if you’re having some doubts about the courses you’ve registered for the fall, you still have time to swap them for other courses. Yes, many courses are closed, but during the next week-or-so, there’ll be lots of people swapping and dropping. The LSA Open Courses website could help you find an open course. Even if a course is closed and has no waitlist, it might still be possible to get in the course: show up the first few times the course meets and ask the instructor about your odds for getting an override. Also even this late, departments can add sections and whole new courses, and we’ll be publicizing some of the open courses in Advise Me Weekly.
Third, while it’s never a good idea to miss course, it’s a particularly bad idea to not show up the first week. Many departments reserve the right to give your spot in a course to another student if you miss a class during the first week. If you absolutely can't make one of the first meetings of a course, make sure you contact the instructor about the situation.
Fourth--this is particularly for first year students--if you don’t plan on using your umich email account as your primary email, make sure that at least once a day you check messages sent to your umich address. All your official University email will go to that account, and you’re responsible for it.
Enjoy the week!
