Welcome to my blog!

Hello fearless readers! Welcome to my first SI Admissions blog which will hopefully give you a few words of wisdom from my crazy corner of the universe. :o) Let me take a few moments to first introduce myself by telling you what I tell everyone who emails me for the first time here at SI with questions:

Thanks for your interest in the School of Information at the University of Michigan! My name is Mary and I am a second year MSI candidate at the School of Information. I am in the tailored specialization and have experience and interests in all four of the specializations at SI. I am here to answer questions for you and otherwise serve as a resource for any questions that you may have, especially from a student perspective. Please feel free to ask me questions regarding the program, finding resources, student life, or anything else to supplement the information being sent to you by the department.

Ok, that was super impersonal, but it gets the point across. So, if you do ever have questions, all you need to do is email me at maryaw@umich.edu and be sure to put in the subject line "Questions about the School of Information." I get so much spam every day that if I don't know your name yet and all you say is "hi" or "re:" my spam filter might just miss your message.

So, two things to tell you about this week. The first is this announcement:
Come to visit SI and the University of Michigan campus! SI will be holding its annual open house for prospective students, Connect With SI:
Sunday, October 22: 1-3:30pm
And
Saturday, November 11: 1-3:30pm.

If you’re interested in this event, you can visit http://www.si.umich.edu/about-SI/event-details.htm?ID=2137 to learn more and RSVP to attend. If you have any questions about Connect with SI, please feel free to ask me!

The second thing I wanted to tell you about is a commonly asked question that I'm getting asked a lot recently because people are either applying for Winter 2007 admissions or are now thinking about Fall 2007 admissions. If you ever have a specific question about the details of your application package, the best place to send your question is: si.admissions@umich.edu.

A question of this nature might be something like if you're unclear about how many letters of recommendation to submit or you don't know if you have to take the GRE and the TOEFL as an international student. However, if you need some advice about how to approach your application package, that is a question I can answer for you! So are questions about student life, classes, etc.

As always, if you're just beginning to check out the program here at SI (or even if you already have, this is great for current updates), I always highly encourage everyone to explore the the SI website at www.si.umich.edu. There's a ton of information on the site that I know you'll find really useful.

Well, I'm still getting over a cold (lucky me, in the first month of classes...) so I'll leave this at it is for now. This is a pretty healthy amount of information (even if my own immune system is not!) and next time you hear from me, I'll give you a week in the life of a full-time student with 3 (count 'em, 3) jobs. How's that for a cliffhanger?
Enjoy the rest of your week,
maw :o)
