Duties And Responsibilities Reporting to the Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, the Associate Director is an administrative leader and key resource for Chinese Studies at Harvard. S/he provides administrative and programmatic leadership of the Center and manages it day-to-day activities. The AD will develop and implement a strategic plan to enhance Harvard's research programs on China and to support Harvard students in Chinese Studies; provide regular programmatic analyses and recommendations; and build and maintain relationships and collaborations within and outside Harvard to enhance the field of Chinese Studies. Advises and collaborates with individual faculty on project organization and proposal development. Oversees projects ranging from large conferences to smaller, ongoing seminars to post-doctoral and visiting scholar programs. In consultation with the Asia Center financial office, develops and manages the Center budget and project budgets, develops grant proposals, and manages Center funds. Hires, supervises, and evaluates the work of staff, and manages administrative operations and workflow, including space management; oversees website content and Center publications and correspondence; and manages collaborative projects with institutions across Harvard and in China. May assist with fundraising and stewardship of gifts.
Required Education, Experience and Skills Ph.D. in a related discipline or equivalent professional experience. Broad knowledge of Chinese affairs and scholarship. Excellent English-language oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in spoken Mandarin and written Chinese. At least seven years of experience in academic or research administration. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage organizational growth and balance multiple simultaneous projects. Supervisory and financial aptitude required; experience with grants preferred. Ability to work productively with all kinds of people. Some travel may be required.
