Student Archaeology Conference, 03/27-29/2009, Romania

Each year, 50-60 student presenters from throughout Romania and abroad
participate in a student conference on Archaeology, History and Museum
Studies. On behalf of the organizing committee, we invite fellow
students from all over the world to the 16th annual student conference
entitled "Beyond the Veil - Spirituality in Prehistory" to be held 27-29 March 2009 in Alba Iulia, Romania.

The topic is spirituality in prehistory. We will consider concepts such as religious and magical practices, rites and rituals, as well as sacred locations and buildings. We will be looking at a range of time periods from the Paleolithic to the end of the Iron Age. We seek papers from diverse theoretical, practical and methodological standpoints that further the discussion of these areas. This meeting will provide an ideal forum for the exchange of information and ideas on recent research and discoveries between students of Archaeology, History and Museum Studies from around the world. We aim to create a stimulating and open scientific atmosphere to support the interaction of students from various different backgrounds.

The conference will be divided into the following 3 sections:
1. Religious and magical beliefs;
2. Rites and rituals; and
3. Sacred locations and buildings.

The deadline for submitting abstracts is 31 December 2008. The deadline for registration is 31 January 2009.

Scottish History Society Postgraduate Prize 2008

The Scottish History Society is delighted to announce a call for applications for its annual prize of £350 to be awarded for the best transcription with historical introduction by a postgraduate student.

The purpose of the prize is to recognise the excellent, and often unpublished, primary source discovery and transcription undertaken by postgraduate students. The competition is open to anyone registered for any postgraduate degree at any university or anyone within five years of graduation with a postgraduate qualification. Previous prize winners are not entitled to compete for the prize, but previously unsuccessful applicants are warmly encouraged to apply. Entry is not restricted to members of the Scottish History Society.

The submission should be of previously unedited primary material and should have formed part of the postgraduate research project. For example, this might be a substantial transcription, or series of transcriptions, used for a dissertation or might be an appendix from a Ph.D. thesis.

The documents submitted should be directly related to the history of Scotland and/or the Scots. The competition is not restricted to material from Scottish archives. Work submitted should not have been published by the entrant or by another.

The prize winning entry will be considered for publication in a subsequent SHS miscellany volume. Thus, by entering into the competition, the prize winner agrees to his/her entry being read by a referee who may suggest improvements for publication. Applications which are deemed to be of sufficient quality but are not awarded the prize will also be considered for publication under the same conditions. The prize winner agrees, where feasible, to attend the SHS AGM (normally in December) to be awarded with the prize. The prize winner also agrees that their success be publicised by the SHS. The winner will receive membership to the society for one year as part of their prize.

Applicants should submit a sample of their transcription and complete the SHS Postgraduate Prize Application Form, which can be obtained from the Secretary or the SHS website (http://www.scottishhistorysociety.org/).

Submissions should be submitted by 15 August 2008 to:

British Scholar Annual Conference, 02/20-21/2009, Austin

This serves as a call for papers for the second annual British Scholar Conference. The conference will be held in Austin, Texas on Friday February 20th and Saturday February 21st, 2009 on the University of Texas campus. The conference, which is organized by the British Scholar Society and British Studies at the University of Texas, focuses on British history from 1688 to the present. The purpose of the British Scholar Conference, just like the forthcoming British Scholar journal, is to highlight the importance of British history from varied perspectives. Established scholars, scholars at the beginning of their careers, and graduate students are welcome to apply and present at the conference.

We are proud to announce that the distinguished historian Linda Colley will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2009 British Scholar Annual Conference. Linda Colley's works include: "The Ordeal of Elizabeth Marsh: A Woman in World History" and "Britons: Forging the Nation 1707-1837." Amongst her many accolades, Professor Colley delivered the Prime Minister's Millennium Lecture at 10 Downing Street in 1999.

The conference accepts both individual paper and complete panel submissions. Submissions of individual papers should include an abstract of 150-300 words as well as a few descriptive keywords. Panels are expected to consist of three to five papers and should be submitted by the person willing to serve as both chair and respondent. In addition to abstracts for each individual paper, the panel chair should also include a brief 100-150 word introduction describing the panel's main theme. The conference does not discriminate between panels and individual paper submissions.

All submissions for inclusion in the British Scholar Annual Conference must be received by Sunday, June 1, 2008. Decisions on inclusion will be made by August 25, 2008. Submissions should be made electronically to conference@britishscholar.org. Updates regarding the conference will be periodically posted to the British Scholar website at www.britishscholar.org. It is hoped that participants will be able to call upon their departments for hotel and transportation expenses.
