The Open Society Fellowship
About the Open Society Fellowship
The Open Society Fellowship supports outstanding individuals from around the world. The fellowship enables innovative professionals-including journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners-to work on projects that inspire meaningful public debate, shape public policy, and generate intellectual ferment within the Open Society Institute.
The fellowship focuses on four themes: National Security and the Open
Society; Citizenship, Membership and Marginalization; Strategies and
Tools for Advocacy and Citizen Engagement; and Understanding
Authoritarianism. OSI also supports a limited number of fellows whose
work focuses on other topics within the scope of its mission.
The Open Society Fellowship supports outstanding individuals from around the world. The Fellowship enables innovative professionals-including journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners-to work on projects that inspire meaningful public debate, shape public policy, and generate intellectual ferment within the Open Society Institute.
Fellowship Categories
*National Security and the Open Society
The national security arena poses profound challenges for open
societies. National security policies may violate civil and political
rights, while the structure of the national security state has
consequences for government transparency, accountability, and democracy. OSI has long worked to broaden public access to information, advance the rule of law, protect minority and human rights, create vibrant civil societies, and promote effective and accountable governance. These considerations, however, receive relatively little attention in the security field.
Likewise, security issues are still under-examined by those working on
OSI's core concerns. Although we recognize that many people are
addressing the consequences of U.S. counter-terrorism policies for civil and political rights, we would like to see more attention paid to the overlap between open society issues and security concerns in a global context. We therefore seek Fellows who will explore the relationships between these two domains.
*Citizenship, Membership, and Marginalization
OSI has always worked for the legal, social, and political inclusion of particular populations-from initiatives on immigration and racial
justice in the U.S. to Roma rights efforts in Europe, from work on
citizenship in Africa and labor migrants in Russia and Central Asia to
the study of Muslim social integration in European cities. The
Fellowship seeks to enrich this work by focusing on conditions of
membership and marginalization that bear specifically upon political
participation. What are the factors that contribute to political
marginalization? To political inclusion and solidarity? What are their
consequences?
*Strategies and Tools for Advocacy and Citizen Engagement
In order to effectively promote social change, OSI and its partners must continuously reassess and recalibrate strategies and tactics. For
example, the rise of new media and growth of youth activism create
opportunities to engage and empower new constituencies. OSI seeks to
support Fellows who explore and seed new and exciting forms of advocacy and citizen engagement.
*Understanding Authoritarianism
OSI has mostly worked in societies that are "open" or opening. But
today, it is increasingly active in politically illiberal and
authoritarian settings. OSI seeks to support projects that help us
better understand these countries-their regimes, civil societies,
political economies, etc.-and to identify apertures for change.
*Open Category
OSI supports a limited number of Fellows whose projects are germane to
its mission but fall outside the four focus categories. In particular,
we welcome applicants who will work on areas of emerging interest to
OSI, especially global warming and post-conflict environments.
All interested applicants should complete the online application form at https://oas.soros.org/oas and submit supporting materials for consideration. Please read the FAQs before applying. Applicants may submit a project proposal or other materials in a language other than English, as long as they also submit an English translation. Certified translations are strongly recommended.
Applicants may mail their hard copy materials to :
Open Society Fellowship
Open Society Institute
400 West 59th Street
New York, NY 10019
Note: Only applicants without Internet access may send an application by post.
OSI considers applications on a rolling basis subject to funding
availability. There are no application deadlines. Applications are
reviewed in a timely manner.
Selection
Fellowship staff review applications in consultation with OSI colleagues and outside experts. All finalists are interviewed. Final selections are made by an external committee.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to, the applicant's experience, the project's relevance to the goals of the Fellowship, and the applicant's potential to accomplish such goals.

Akademie Schloss Solitude

Akademie Schloss Solitude - located in Stuttgart, Germany - is granting approx. 65 residency fellowships of three to twelve months in duration. A public foundation opened in 1990 and funded by the State of Baden- Wurttemberg, the Akademie Schloss Solitude operates an international residency program awarding live/work fellowships to artists. Hundreds of artists from over 70 countries have developed and advanced projects at the Akademie since its opening, creating a close-knit, global network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year.

within the past five years are welcome to apply. Currently enrolled
university or college students (at the time of application) will not be considered for selection. Each fellowship recipient is granted Euro 1000 per month, in addition to free lodging. Max Weber Fellowships
The Max Weber Programme at the European University Institute (EUI) is
Europe's largest postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and is
funded by the European Commission.
Max Weber Fellowships are for 1 or 2 years and are open to candidates
who have received a doctorate in economics, social and political
sciences, law or history within the last 5 years.
These fellowships are intended for young researchers who want to consolidate their research and training in an active interdisciplinary environment before entering the increasingly internationalised academic job market, or young academics who are at the start of their careers in an academic institution and who wish to develop their skills in advanced research and academic practice.
Fellows are selected on the basis of their research accomplishments and potential, their academic career interests, and the availability of the EUI faculty to provide mentorship.
Max Weber Fellows are encouraged and supported in their own research
agendas and will work in close cooperation with the Departments of the European University Institute (EUI) and/or the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS). Fellows are associated with a department.
The Max Weber Programme also provides communication skills (writing,
presentation and teaching), multidisciplinary research workshops, and
understanding of professional international academic life.
The deadline for application for fellowships for the academic year
2009/2010 is 25 October 2008.

Scottish History Society Postgraduate Prize 2008
The Scottish History Society is delighted to announce a call for applications for its annual prize of £350 to be awarded for the best transcription with historical introduction by a postgraduate student.
The purpose of the prize is to recognise the excellent, and often unpublished, primary source discovery and transcription undertaken by postgraduate students. The competition is open to anyone registered for any postgraduate degree at any university or anyone within five years of graduation with a postgraduate qualification. Previous prize winners are not entitled to compete for the prize, but previously unsuccessful applicants are warmly encouraged to apply. Entry is not restricted to members of the Scottish History Society.
The submission should be of previously unedited primary material and should have formed part of the postgraduate research project. For example, this might be a substantial transcription, or series of transcriptions, used for a dissertation or might be an appendix from a Ph.D. thesis.
The documents submitted should be directly related to the history of Scotland and/or the Scots. The competition is not restricted to material from Scottish archives. Work submitted should not have been published by the entrant or by another.
The prize winning entry will be considered for publication in a subsequent SHS miscellany volume. Thus, by entering into the competition, the prize winner agrees to his/her entry being read by a referee who may suggest improvements for publication. Applications which are deemed to be of sufficient quality but are not awarded the prize will also be considered for publication under the same conditions. The prize winner agrees, where feasible, to attend the SHS AGM (normally in December) to be awarded with the prize. The prize winner also agrees that their success be publicised by the SHS. The winner will receive membership to the society for one year as part of their prize.
Applicants should submit a sample of their transcription and complete the SHS Postgraduate Prize Application Form, which can be obtained from the Secretary or the SHS website (http://www.scottishhistorysociety.org/).
Submissions should be submitted by 15 August 2008 to:

Jean Monnet Fellowship Programme at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute, Florence
The online application form for the Jean Monnet Fellowships for the academic year 2009/10 will be accessible on the web from early July 2008 with a deadline of 25 October 2008.
Jean Monnet Fellowships
Through its Jean Monnet Fellowship Programme the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies offers yearly between 15 and 20 fellowships to post-docs in an early stage of their academic career. During their stay at the RSCAS, fellows work on a selected topic that fits well in the overall research profile of the RSCAS and they are expected to participate actively in the academic life of the Centre and of the EUI. Each fellow is assigned a professorial mentor. Their stay at the Centre should result in the publication of either a RSCAS Working Paper or a publication in a scientific journal or with an appropriate publishing house.
Selection Criteria
Applications for a Jean Monnet Fellowship should include a description of the research project on which the applicant proposes to work during a stay at the Centre. The main criteria during the selection procedure are the CV of the applicant, the overall scientific quality of the proposal, and the fit of the proposal with the research programme of the Centre. In the selection process priority will be given to proposals that fit well with one or more of the core research themes of the Centre.
The current core research themes of the RSCAS are:
Institutions, Governance, and Democracy
Migration
Economic and Monetary Policy
Competition Policy and Market Regulation
Culture, Knowledge and Innovation
International and Transnational Relations
A detailed description of each of the core themes and of the various projects based at the Centre can be found on the RSCAS web pages.
Two of the fellowships will be awarded as ‘Vincent Wright Fellowships’, in memory of the distinguished political scientist Vincent Wright. These fellowships are usually awarded to candidates working on European Comparative Politics or European Comparative History.
The Institute for Democracy Constantinos Karamanlis funds the Karamanlis Fellowship on Democracy which is awarded in the framework of the European Observatory on Democracy (EUDO) project.
