Korean Language Programs for Summer 2009 in Korea




There are many great schools in Korea during the summer months that can fit many diverse schedules and skill levels. The Center For Korean Studies works directly with many of these programs to provide university students the best opportunities for learning the Korean language.

The Summer Special Program:

The Special Summer Program is designed for students who want to take advantage of their summer vacation to learn the Korean language and culture. This program combines Korean studies with optional trips to historic Korean and cultural sites. There is an optional 3 day field trip that allows the students to visit historic sites. Through the field trip, students are able to see the ancient culture site, modern industrial facility and correctly understand Korean history. Students can experience Korean culture through a number of special activities (2 hours a day, 2 days a week). In the lower levels, emphasis is placed upon conversation, reinforced by writing. Further class hours are spent on practical conversation, listening, reading, composition, and cross-cultural communication. In the afternoon, students can experience Korean culture through one of the many special activities. Korean classes are held 5 days a week (from 9:00 to 13:00) for 5 weeks (total 100 class hours).

Language Education Institute - Seoul National University:

Korean Language Summer Program:

Introduction
The 5-week Summer Korean Language Program, offered by the Korean Language Education Institute at Seoul National University, is for English speaking students who wish to learn the Korean language and culture during their summer vacation. All classes are held from 09:00 to 13:00, five days a week.

This program provides Korean language lessons and opportunities to experience Korean culture. Classes are offered at two levels of proficiency, beginning and intermediate, with an average of thirteen students per class. Classes are conducted in structures based on level and need: textbook-centered lessons, skill-based lessons (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
Beginning Level
Students with minimal to no knowledge of Korean learn how to survive through basic everyday situations in Korea. Activities include:
- Basic pronunciation exercises
- Basic expression exercises
- Basic language skills training (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
The Korean Language Education Institute has developed and introduced a special on-line education program, Online Korean, in order for students to better understand and take greater interest in Korean.
Intermediate Level
Students with basic proficiency in Korean are taught intermediate conversational skills including the vocabulary and expressions necessary for daily life.
Students may take Writing I or II, pronunciation or Chinese character classes, based on their needs, in the 4th period. In addition, the Culture lessons and Idiom Instructions may help students' better understanding of Korean custom.
Cultural Experiences
1) Field trip to the DMZ: Students will be able to participate in a visit to the DMZ, the most heavily fortified border in the world (4 hours). For more information.

2) Ichon Traditional Ceramic Tour:A field trip to one of Korea's most well known ceramic production locations, Ichon, will offer students an opportunity to take part in the ceramic-making process.

3) Performance: Students have an opportunity to watch a comedy material art performance called Jump.

4) Selective Lessons: Students can choose a class from the list of special interest afternoon lessons, including calligraphy, Korean traditional percussion quartet, or Chinese Character lesson.
5) Korean Dishes: Students may experience Korean traditional dishes such as Bulgogi, Bibimbap, etc.
Specialty
1) SNU Buddy Program
Students participating in the SNU Buddy Program will be assigned a "buddy" from the SNU student body who will benefit the student's stay in Korea in a variety of ways.
2) Special Lectures
The special lectures program provides lectures on current issues in East-Asian politics and international relations.
3) Korean Cinema
Students will have an opportunity to watch Korean movies in the afternoon as a learning experience as well as a fun activity.
4) Credit Acknowledgement
Students will earn 3 credits for one hundred hours of Korean language study. If credits earned from SNU need to be transferred, students will need to contact their respective schools in advance for verification.
* In case of international transfers, students will be responsible for all transfer and mailing fees.

Sogang University - Korean Language Education Center:

Regular Course:

This is the main program of the Korean Language Education Center at Sogang University, and it oversees the improvement of communication in Korean as our top priority. This course schedule includes a 9 am Writing Class;
Each school day has four hours of class. (1hr-Writing, 1hr-Speaking, 2hrs-Listening/Reading)

Characteristics:
Sogang classrooms center around students and focus on developing speaking skills.
Speaking practice, listening comprehension, reading, and writing are cohesively integrated into the class curriculum.

Students learn speech patterns for use in everyday life, which effectively increases their communicative abilities.

Class is taught by three instructors per day. In this way, students are exposed to a diversity of teaching styles.

By adding cultural content, the program further enhances students' understanding of Korean culture.

* Reduce 20% of tuition fee of one person in case brothers or sisters register at the same time.
* Reduce 20% of tuition fee of diplomats, government officials, or their families dispatched to government institutions of each country.
* Reduce 10% of tuition fee of Korea University fellows' sons or daughters.
