Funding: The Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell Scholarships
The Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell Scholarships present undergraduates the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom or Ireland for two to three years of graduate work. (The Rhodes is specific to Oxford; the Marshall can be used at any university in the UK; the Mitchell is for universities in Ireland only.) In addition to engaging in graduate work at top universities abroad, recipients of these scholarships become members of scholarly communities through which they can make lasting friendships and access a range of resources for future work and career advancement.
The University of Michigan’s Provost’s Council on Student Honors is seeking promising juniors to apply for these scholarships. Many people think that Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell winners fit a single profile: perfect grades, nominally active outside the classroom, mostly an academic superstar. In fact, the past ten years have brought a diverse set of winners, many of whom distinguished themselves through community leadership, non-traditional academic subjects and real-world experiences outside the classroom. It’s true that the strongest candidates have good grades – at least a 3.7 in core (i.e., major-related) classes. It’s also the case that grades are not everything: we want students with strong leadership skills and community involvement.
If you know of students who should consider applying for one of these scholarships, please refer them to this information page on the application process (it is necessary to apply through the Provost’s Office and secure the institutional nomination before applying formally to the scholarship trusts):

Fiona Rose Greenland, a former UM student who won the Rhodes Scholarship in 1998, is helping the Provost’s Council to identify promising candidates. Please contact her with questions or recommended names; she is happy to meet students informally over coffee to talk about the process.
