Sabbatical Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Fellowship Deadline: October 15, 2009

Eligibility

The Sabbatical Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences program is open to mid-career faculty of universities and 4-year colleges in the United States who have been granted a sabbatical/research year but for whom financial support from the home institution is available for only part of the year. Candidates must not have had a financially supported leave at any time subsequent to September 1, 2007. The doctoral degree must have been conferred no later than 2002 and no earlier than 1989.

Stipend and Tenure

$30,000 to $40,000 for the second half of an awarded sabbatical year. The precise amount of each fellowship will be determined by the committee. Tenure of the fellowship is for the academic year 2010-2011 or for the calendar year 2011.

Applications

Complete applications (see How to Apply for submission information) include materials listed below.

1. Application:

* Cover sheet, including contact information, eligibility criteria, and information on the letter writers.

* Letter from a university official, approving leave for sabbatical/research year, or affirming eligibility for leave, and giving date when final approval will be forthcoming

* Statement of the project, in three sections: (1) purpose, methodology, and interpretive framework; (2) how the project will contribute to present knowledge of the subject; and (3) work accomplished to date. The statement must not exceed the equivalent of 4 double-spaced typed pages (approximately 1,000 words).

* Applicant's curriculum vitae, maximum of three pages; including education, work experience, and publications of monographs and articles in peer-reviewed journals, indicating with an asterisk the publications that are particularly significant to the present proposal.

* Writing sample, a maximum of 15 photocopied pages from a work in print.

2. Three letters, which MUST be received by October 15.

Deadline and Notification

Applications and letters must be received by October 15. Written notification is sent in March.
