In particular, let me turn the attention of PSA members to the new history course being offered this summer, which should be of interest to students of Jewish and Polish as well as Ukrainian history:

Jews in Ukraine: Ten Centuries of History and Culture
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern, Associate Professor in Jewish History, Northwestern University
Who were Ashkenazi Jews and why did they migrate to East Europe? How did they manage to create one of the biggest and diverse Jewish communities in the world? This introductory level survey course of Jewish history and culture in Ukraine seeks to answer these questions. Using the tension between various national narratives as an intellectual tool, this course explores how Jews in Ukraine perceived historical upheavals such as the 1648 Cossack revolution and the 1881 pogroms, how they built a robust communal autonomy active over 500 years, and how social and cultural developments in Ukraine shaped Jewish identities that guide Jewish mentality to date.

There is the possibility of FLAS fellowships for language study.
