CFP Conference: Siberia of Socialism: Private Memories of the Soviet Century
Deadline: February 1, 2013
Center for Independent Social Research and Education (Irkutsk) with the support of the Mikhail Prokhorov Foundation is pleased to announce the call for papers for the international conference “Siberia of Socialism: Private Memories of the Soviet Century” that will take place on April 7-12, 2013.
The key goal of the conference is to bring together young Russian and foreign scholars of Siberia. We hope that dialogues and discussions will help to articulate new directions and approaches for studying Siberia. We invite junior scholars in humanities and social sciences to submit proposals that explore vernacular memories – be they oral, literary, or visual – of people lived in Siberia in the XX century. We are especially interested in theoretically informed proposals that are based on ethnographic and archival research.
Possible topics might include (but are not limited to) the following:
- modernization of daily life in Siberia;
- everyday life of Siberian colonization;
- labor camps and construction projects in Siberia;
- “wars of memory” in families and local communities;
- historical traumas of relocation and exile;
The conference is mostly aimed at junior scholars (graduate students and assistant professors), but we will also consider proposals from advanced undergraduate students.
The working language of the conference is Russian.
The applicants are asked to indicate the stage of the research they are going to present and its sources. The finalists will be contacted around February 5th, 2013.
