Study Abroad: East—Central European Study Tour

Travel to East-Central Europe in Summer 2013 and earn 6 credits. Join two Cap instructors who have
travelled extensively throughout the region and study with them the political, social, economic and
demographic transformation that has gone on throughout the region since the collapse of the Soviet Empire.

ACADEMIC COURSE
POL 299 – Politics of East-Central Europe
In this course, we will look at how and why two
states, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, which
shared a long common history, ultimately
followed very different paths to a postcommunist
reality, including in the case of the
latter, a split into two new states: the Czech
Republic and Slovakia.

GEOG 249 – Regional Geography
This course is designed to acquaint students
with the regional geography of East-Central
Europe, with a primary focus on the Czech
Republic and Slovakia. Through readings,
seminars, and interactive tours students will gain
an understanding of the land and its people
during a time of great social and political
change.

ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE:
• Visits to medieval castles, worldrenowned
spas and awe-inspiring hikes
• Touring the Danube, Revolutionary
squares and the Charles Bridge
• Guest Lectures at Universities throughout
the region
• Discussions with UN, OSCE, and NGO
officials


COSTS AND FEES
$3,000.00 CDN
Includes: round trip airfare, accommodation,
in-country transportation, entrance
tickets to scheduled visitor attractions

An Expression of Interest Form is
required to be completed prior to
receiving applications. Once selected,
student will be asked to complete an
application package and make a $350
deposit to the Field School Program.
This Field School is 6 credit s and is open
to students in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year
studies in all Capilano programs.
