Russian Girl’s Studies: Agenda and Prospects

Girls born in the late 90's - early 2000's are fast entering into the
social life in Russia. In contrast with previous generations of girls
this is really new, postsoviet generation - the generation of the
Internet, social networks and global mass culture. They speak in a
different voice, raise new issues and seek to get answers to them.
Today’s Russian society experiencing an evident cultural and political
conflict between conservatives and modernists is increasingly concerned
about the ways girls move into adulthood and sometimes falls into moral
panic. Public discourse represented in mass media and Internet
demonstrates an over-sensitive or even aggressive reaction to girls’
unexpected advocacy or other offbeat patterns of behavior. However till
now this is not adequately reflected in the academic debates.


Despite the fact that gender studies in Russia emerged in the early 1990s
and have already become a multidisciplinary research area, Girlhood
studies have always been fragmented and dispersed in them: girls are still
very rarely seen by Russian researchers as a separate and peculiar age and
gender group. It can be safely said that girlhood studies have not grown
beyond the boundaries of traditional descriptive approaches whereby
girlhood is viewed as a closed, undeveloped world, a “pre-life”. It’s as
if girls are denied the right to reflect or act.
In Russia the academic discussion about Girlhood Studies has been
initiated through the international cooperation of International
Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies (The Gorbachev
Foundation), the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Girlhood Studies: An
Interdisciplinary Journal and The Journal of Social Policy Studies
(Russia). We consider Girlhood Studies as an innovative theoretical
approach and significant sphere of international interdisciplinary
dialogue in relation to girlhood. Such a dialogue could expand the vision
that has taken shape in gender studies/women studies as well as influence
on public debate about girls which are becoming more visible and
challenging in modern culture. We believe that this special issue of GHS
Journal will help to open a new area of research and public discussion
in today’s Russia.
We invite scholars from all academic disciplines working on various
subjects within Russian Girls’ Studies , Gender Studies and Women Studies
to take part in a special issue

Themes which seem of particular interest include, but are by no means
limited to:

* Experiencing transformation: Russian girls of various ages and
different generations through the lens of statistics and sociology
* Rethinking femininities: girl culture in contemporary Russia
* Girl's experience and its interpretation by the girls: how has
gender, class, locality and
* ethnicity intertwined in these interpretations
* Challenges and risks that girls in Russia facing today

Olga Zdravomyslova and Elena Iarskaia - Smirnova will be guest-editing
this themed issue and will contribute an introductory overview of Russian
research on girls and girlhood.
