For those who have received or are going to receive their BA from the University of Michigan, consider enrolling in this program or spending a semester with us as a part of your MA program at home. IMARES, an advanced graduate program for students who already hold a B.A. degree or its equivalent, offers training and research opportunities as well as firsthand experience to get a close feel for Russia and the many other countries in the wider region. In 1998 this program began as M.A. in Russian Studies.
From 1 February to 7 May 2010 we are running our first undergraduate semester in Russian Studies (http://www.eu.spb.ru/semester). It draws upon the resources and experience of IMARES but is tuned to the requirements of western undergraduate training. The semester abroad module for mature undergraduates includes classes in Russian history, politics and culture as well as intensive Russian language classes. History Takes Place, 09/7-18/2009, Warsaw
Application deadline: June 18, 2009
Call for applications
Warsaw – A Mirror of European History and Contemporary Reality
Summer School "History Takes Place: European Memorial Sites"
September 7 – 18, 2009
Unlike any other European capital, Warsaw clearly exposes the major transition periods of the past two centuries. The city was greatly influenced by the illusionary splendour and social contrasts of the legendary Saxon period, the humiliation of the capital during the partitions of Poland, the great reform projects of the Polish enlightenment, and Warsaw's role as an imperial Russian residence. Warsaw was never a provincial town.
The profile of Warsaw was forged by the erratic national movements of the 19th century, the peasant liberation movement, industrialization, the exciting emergence of the bourgeoisie, and the largest Jewish community in Europe. At the end of the century, Warsaw had become the fourth largest city of the Russian Empire. In 1918, it was again proclaimed the capital of Poland. The following decades were characterized by conflicts about the territorial order and the borders of the Polish nation state, inflation, artistic revival, the
"Golden Twenties", the financial crisis, and state-controlled democracy, which, at the end of the 1930ies, was declared dispensable.
The second German occupation of the 20th century caused the deepest and bloodiest disruption in the history of Warsaw. In fact, the city had ceased to exist in 1945. Its citizens had died in war, were murdered or deported and its Jewish community had been systematically annihilated.
The reconstruction of Warsaw was both, a political myth, and at the same time an excellent performance of heritage management. It provided basis for the today’s capital, together with major demographic changes and the sometimes well-planned and sometimes chaotic expansion of the city into a socialist metropolis.
Since 2003 and at different central locations, the ZEIT-Stiftung has invited up to 20 young historians and scholars of cultural studies (primarily Ph.D. students) to attend academic seminars exploring the "Spectrum of Central and Eastern Europe" (H. v. Keyserlingk). These major sites and their regions are perceived as lieux de mémoire. Participants explore historical traces in local topographies, in architecture and monuments. The city itself is studied as a historical source - "History Takes Place". The Summer Schools intend to internationalize and affiliate the historically-oriented humanities and cultural studies.. This year, Prof. Dr. Werner Benecke (European University Viadrina at Frankfurt/Oder) will serve as the academic director of the Summer School in Warsaw, which will also be sponsored by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.
Please mail applications including cover letter, curriculum vitae and a paper proposal (up to two pages) to

First summer school of the B/C/S language in Sarajevo
20 – 31 July, 2009
WELCOME TO UMLIP/AYLI
The Association of Young Linguists and Interpreters in Bosnia and Herzegovina is an organization founded by former students of the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo with the goal of gathering young people who are engaging in language. Today, the Association has around fifty members who are engaged in translation, teaching, and linguistics. Some of our most important activities are: the web-portal bosanski.ba the bimonthly bulletin lingvisti.ba, and a course on simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. This is the first time that we are organizing a summer school of the B/C/S language, hoping that we can turn it into a well known and successful language school.
WHY LEARN B/C/S
Who can apply?
The only requirement for applying at this school is that you must be older than 15.
So, if you are from Bosnia and Herzegovina, if you know someone who speaks B/C/S, if you are studying the languages of BiH, if you want to read Ivo Andriæ in original, if your husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend is from the Balkans... These are some of the reasons for you to attend this school. Students can be:
- Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina who currently live abroad, descendants of those who emigrated from BiH and who want to brush up their language, or those who want to start learning it.
- This is an excellent opportunity for foreign citizens living in Sarajevo and BiH who do not have time to attend courses during the year.
- Those who study Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian outside of BiH are given the chance to place the languages they learn into the cultural framework of this area.
- Everyone else who has the desire to learn the languages and cultures of BiH.
Description of the school
The summer school is organized as intensive two-week classes. We offer three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. You will take a placement test before the beginning of the school so that we can assign you to the appropriate group. The classes start at 9 am, and last for four school hours (45 minutes) with a 15 minute break between every hour.
Levels
The two-week school is held at three different levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. You will have a total of 40 classes to help you to advance your conversational skills, but also to learn the grammatical structure of the B/C/S language. You can also use the afternoons for one-to-one classes with teachers if you want to solve a grammatical problem, or do your homework.
Certificate
After you pass the test at the end of the school, you will receive a certificate confirming that you speak Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian at your level.
FREE TIME
After classes, you can stay at our premises, use the library, surf the internet, or spend your time in the city.

Make sure you specify in your application what you would like to do at the workshops.
Trips
We use the weekends for visits to the some of our greatest monuments and sites. E.g. Fojnica Monastery, Kraljeva Sutjeska or UNESCO World Heritage List Candidates: Jajce, Mostar and Višegrad. Besides this, we also organize afternoon visits to the spring of the Bosna River and Pionirska dolina.
ACCOMODATION

Summer Study: Berkeley Russian Program
THE BERKELEY RUSSIAN WORKSHOP
Slavic 10 is a 10-week intensive program in elementary Russian (equivalent
to the one-year Slavic 1 and 2 sequence at Berkeley) and presumes no
previous knowledge of the language. Students will acquire a basic knowledge
of Russian grammar and a useful vocabulary. The program emphasizes the
fundamental tools necessary for both written and oral communication at the
beginning level. Small class sections meet Monday through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and are taught by experienced Russian language
instructors. Daily homework and laboratory assignments complement
instruction. In order to maximize language acquisition, the course proceeds
at a rigorous pace and is conducted largely in Russian. Students should
prepare for a full-time investment as these courses cover 30 weeks of
regular instruction over a 10-week session.
The course also includes a significant cultural program, intended to
supplement the language learning with a broader cultural literacy. This
program consists of a Wednesday film series (during the weekly 2:00-4:00 lab
section) and a Friday tea, which will feature invited guests and native
speakers from the Bay Area Russian community. Not only do these events
provide another context for exposure to Russian (they are all conducted in
Russian), they also serve as a way to connect with the active
Russian-speaking community in San Francisco and the East Bay. The more
popular highlights of the summer include a field trip to a Russian
restaurant and bookstore and the annual potluck picnic.
For more information, please consult the Slavic Department website
(http://ls.berkeley.edu/dept/slavic/sum09description.htm) or contact the
Program Director, Molly Brunson (brunson@berkeley.edu).

Summer study abroad: Minorities in Eastern Europe, Hannover
Minorities in Eastern Europe. Minority Politics and Minority Conflicts in Eastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st Centuries
Leibniz Universität Hannover Summer Academy
30 August – 13 September 2009
Call for Papers
The powder keg of the Caucasus is not the only situation which demonstrates that the problem of minorities continues to be ever-present and explosive on many borders of Eastern Europe. Although it is currently not as rife with conflict as it has been in the past, the existence of ethnic or religious minorities is characteristic for almost every state in Eastern Europe. Nation states emerged from the ashes of the Russian and Habsburg Empires which nonetheless had the same multiethnic composition as what had gone before. Even the “ethnic cleansing” carried out during and after the Second World War did not create the ethnically homogeneous nation states envisioned by those who had organized the violent expulsion of so-called undesirable groups. The collapse of the Soviet Block has by no means brought an end to the multiethnic diversity of many nation states in Eastern Europe. The integration of minorities has still not succeeded everywhere; conflicts between titular nations and minorities are not events from the distant past, but are still with us today. The postulated “end of nationalism” in Europe has proven to be little more than wishful thinking. The states of Eastern Europe are, for the most part, still far from seeing themselves as multiethnic communities based on the interaction of citizens with various ethnic or religious backgrounds.
Leibniz Universität Hannover's summer academy Minorities in Eastern Europe will make this potential for conflict the subject for interdisciplinary historical and political analysis. The goal is an intensive debate of the historical and political dimensions of diverse ethnic and religious interests, national minority politics and the conflict situations in Eastern Europe. The existence of minorities will be considered not so much as a “problem” rather than as a political enrichment for any nation state based on the principles of citizenship.
Program
Our two-week summer academy offers a variety of learning opportunities organized in cooperation with our Eastern European partner universities. Presentations, seminars, an international colloquium for PhD students, simulation of a fictitious minority conflict, films, excursions and an interesting cultural program mean that our summer academy will be diverse and attractive for all who are interested. Outstanding scholars and experts will broaden the historical and political horizons of the minority question.
Visit the website at http://www.hist.uni-hannover.de/sommerakademie/minderheiten-in-osteuropa/

INTERNSHIPS- Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art, Uzbekistan
INTERNSHIPS- Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art named for Savitsky, Nukus
The Friends of Nukus Museum (FoNM), an international non-governmental
organization registered in The Netherlands, invites applications from
graduate students and/or young professionals interested in undertaking
a one month (minimum) internship in Nukus, Uzbekistan during the
period May-October, 2009. The purpose would be to assist the
Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art named after I. V. Savitsky -also
known, simply, as the Savitsky Museum, or the Nukus Museum - in a
range of strategic and other museum-related activities to be agreed
with its director, Ms. Marinika Babanazarova.
Igor Savitsky, the Museum's founder, was born in Kiev, brought up and
educated in Moscow, and, from 1950-57, participated as a painter in
the Khorezm archeological and ethnographic expedition. During this
period, he became fascinated with Karakalpak culture and art -
especially its costumes, textiles and jewelry - and began a
collection. At the same time, he started collecting the works of
artists from, and connected to Central Asia, including members of the
Uzbek school, and, later on, those of the Russian avant garde, many of
whom had been persecuted for their work. Savitsky's cultural
sensitivity and persistence earned him the trust not only of the older
generation of Karakalpaks and the families of Central Asian and
Russian artists who gave or sold him their textiles, jewelry, and
paintings, but also the government of Karakalpakstan which, in 1966,
agreed to his proposal to establish an art museum in Nukus. Since
then, this unique Museum has ensured the renaissance of an almost
forgotten culture and the preservation of an almost forgotten
generation of artists and their paintings. Additional detailed
information about the Museum and its history is available on its
website: <www.savitskycollection.org>
Internships: Despite increasing numbers of foreign visitors and
significant coverage in the international media - e.g. NHK TV, New
York Times, Sunday Times, Le Figaro, Frankfurter Allgemeine, NRC
Handelsblad, Steppe Magazine, Télérama - the Museum's financial and
human resources, especially for essential conservation and
restoration, are extremely limited. It also needs assistance in
developing further its income-generating activities and in marketing
and promoting its services, both within Central Asia and especially
abroad. Against this background, selected interns would work with
Museum senior staff on a variety of activities - to be agreed with its
Director, Ms. Marinika Babanazarova - that reflect the Museum's
immediate needs as well as the academic and/or professional interests
and qualifications of the interns themselves.
Applications: Interested students and/or young professionals should
send a CV and letter of motivation, including their preferred month(s)
of availability, to friendsnukusmuseum@gmail.com by March 16.
Short-listed candidates will be notified by March 23 and, following
(telephoned) interviews during that week, final selections are
expected to be made by March 31. Subject to the number and quality of
applications received, including their proposed availability and
timing, up to five interns may be selected.
Specific tasks are expected to include the following:
- Researching funding options for Museum projects and drafting grant
proposals;
- Helping to conceptualize future Museum exhibitions, In Uzbekistan
and abroad;
- Assisting in development of the Museum's longer-term development strategy;
- Liaising with potential donors and partners in Tashkent and, in
particular, abroad;
- Drafting and translating into various European languages publicity
briefs and other information materials about the Museum and its
collections; and
- Coordinating with the Friends of Nukus Museum.
Interested candidates should satisfy some or all of the following criteria:
- A formal qualification in and/or actual experience of the art
history of Russia and Central Asia in particular, and of the cultural
and arts landscape of the former Soviet Union in general;
- Basic knowledge of Russian;
- Excellent English writing skills;
- Familiarity with, and understanding of donor organizations and
foundations active in Central Asia; and
- Commitment to accomplishment under challenging circumstances,
including tolerance for difficult living conditions.
Candidates should be available for not less than one month during the
period May-October 2009. Unfortunately, neither the Museum nor the
FoNM is able to provide funds for travel to, or subsistence in Nukus.
However, the FoNM would be glad to provide any information required,
including a letter of recommendation, in support of a funding
application to a relevant foundation, university or government.
Similarly, the Museum would also help with logistics, such as finding
an apartment in Nukus and in providing a letter of invitation in
support of visa application for Uzbekistan.
These internships offer a rare opportunity: (a) to research the
culture and history of Karakalpakstan and its people: (b) to learn
about and study the world's 2nd largest collection of Russian avant
garde; and, for those with broader interests, (c) to better understand
the important environmental and other development transition issues
that are affecting the Aral Sea Basin overall.

Summer Study Abroad, Tallinn
Tallinn University's Summer School differs from other summer schools because, on the one hand, it puts forward the best of Estonian specialists together with teaching high level Estonian language and presents finest aspects of local culture. On the other hand, it integrates into the programme a wide range of internationally claimed academics, opinion leaders and intellectuals from all around the world.
However, the goal of Tallinn Summer School is not only to give an opportunity to the best faculty members from various disciplines. Most important is to bring together the incredibly diverse array of students and academics from all over the world in order to introduce them to different ways of thinking in the most relaxed and most casual manner.
Every year we revise and develop our programme in order to bring in new and relevant topics. In 2009, apart from different languages, creative writing, film making, painting, photography and communication workshops, summer school will delve into the matter of Everyday Life: what are the strategies and performances of social life, the networks of daily rhythms, and the common and minimal aspects of the habitat, the background noise? Key-note speaker is American philosopher prof. Alphonso Lingis. The second focus is debate on Georgia. Although all agree that democracy, freedom, justice – are good things, but do these words mean different people different things? We seem to understand something, but do we understand enough? Key-note speakers are different academics, e.g. prof. Svante Cornell from Uppsala University, former prime-minister of Estonia, Mart Laar but also Georgian politicians from both ends – coalition and opposition.
Tallinn Summer School is a meeting place for inquisitive minds!

Study Abroad: Russian Studies or Art History, St. Petersburg
I would like to bring to your attention our semester-long program in St. Petersburg designed for students majoring in either Russian Studies or Art History.
This program is truly unique, as it grants our students a virtually unlimited access to St. Petersburg's Hermitage, whose collection of European art is on par with the British Museum or the Louvre. Our students are taught by museum curators, with some classes taking place on days when the museums are closed to the general public. Program participants also have a chance to view and handle works in museum storage rooms.
Other classes are taught in St. Petersburg's Russian Museum, a major depository of Russian art from icons to post-modernism.
The program is in the fourth year of its existence. In addition to Vassar students, we have had participants from many other colleges.
The deadline is March 2009. For more information, follow the link below:

Internship opportunity for American students in Russia
**********
We invite American study abroad students in Russia to intern at our
American Centers and Corners. We have 29 such locations around Russia, and many are eager for volunteers and interns. An internship at an American Center or Corner is a fantastic way to learn about US public diplomacy and a great way to make local friends. A favorite activity is running local chat clubs in English, but we also have people dropping by the Corners all the time to give talks about American holidays, their home states, politics, etc. I do these kinds of talks all the time, will be speaking in Bryansk next week! You can see a full list of our Corners and Centers in Russia at http://www.amcorners.ru

Study Abroad: Black Europe, 06/14-25/2009, NL
Black Europe: Exploring Dimensions of Citizenship, Race and Ethnic Relations.
June 14th-25th 2009
This course will examine the multiple constructions of the term Black Europe and the social, economic and political implications within. Students will be able to earn 3 US (5 ECTS) credits for their participation. The content and the description of the summer school are listed below. If you are interested in hearing more about the course, please send a request for additional information via email to
a.abdou@ninsee.nl
or visit the website,
http://www.ninsee.nl/?pagina=196&parentID=83&level=2
This course is a collaboration between the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and NiNsee, the National institute for the Study of Dutch Slavery and its Legacy.
Course Description
A multitude of discourses have emerged relative to the internationalism of Blacks worldwide and particularly in the Americas, but the prominence and impact of the Black presence in Europe has not been adequately explored. This seminar will examine the multiple constructions of the term Black Europe and the social, economic and political implications within. We will look specifically at anti-discrimination laws as they have arisen in various European countries; comparing the history of regulation and management of race and ethnic relations and the discourse surrounding the concept of Blackness and self-identification.
The seminar will begin with a historical overview of social and civil conflict in Europe leading to the formation of laws and antidiscrimination legislation within the EU. We will trace the chain of events following social and civil conflicts that prompted these policies and analyze the legislative and intellectual discourse produced in the aftermath.
We will also explore the notions of blackness as; a categorization, employed in Britain to demark all non-natives; as a social construction, employed by natives to indicate (non) belonging; as a Diaspora living within Europe; and as a contestation of the dominant (White) paradigm. We will focus on the historical and colonial legacies of European countries to discuss the origins of Black Europe and investigate the impact of these legacies on policies and legislation.
This course will also seek to address the dimensions of race and ethnic relations that are unique to Europe; examining the ways in which conceptions of the "other" are institutionalized and reproduced; the rise of xenophobia in various EU countries; the legal definitions and discourse surrounding the conceptualized "other"; and examining the ways in which each country has dealt with issues of race and national identity.
Following the programme, students are welcome to participate in a two-day conference (June 26th and 27th) in Paris on "Racism Against People Without States" as part of the annual conference series (2006-2009) at the Maison des Science de l'Homme (MSH) organized by Dr.
Ramon Grosfoguel.
Students are also welcome to participate in a two- day symposium following the Summer School on Black Europe and the Paris Conference in Amsterdam entitled, Trajectories for Emancipation and Black European Thinkers (June 29th and 30th). Keynote speakers include Lewis Gordon, Walter Mignolo and Allison Blakely. The symposium will be followed by the National Commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery on July 1st. NiNsee will plan a full day of events to commemorate this historic event. See the website for more details. www.ninsee.nl
