Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF)

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program assists graduate students in the humanities and social sciences to formulate research proposals for their doctoral dissertations within interdisciplinary research fields of the humanities and social sciences.

Each year, pairs of tenured professors, each at difference U.S. doctoral degree-granting university, are invited to propose interdisciplinary fields of research for student training. The DPDF Selection Committee then selects five research fields. Graduate students who are beginning to plan dissertation research projects, usually in their 2nd and 3rd years of graduate study, apply to one of the five research fields. Sixty applicants (twelve per field) are selected to participate in two workshops designed by the faculty field research directors: one in the late spring, which prepares the students to undertake summer research that will inform the design of their dissertation proposals, and the other in the fall, which helps students to employ their summer research experiences in writing dissertation and research funding proposals. During the summer, between the workshops, students undertake pre-dissertation research with support of up to $5,000 to cover expenses. Each faculty research director is provided $10,000. All costs of faculty and student workshop participation are covered by the SSRC.

The program is administered by the Social Science Research Council and funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Improving Research and Educational Activities in Higher Education

United States-Russia Program: Improving Research and Educational Activities in Higher Education

Application available: May 8, 2009

Deadline for transmittal of applications: July 7, 2009 Federal Register Notice

Note: The revised notice, below, was published on May 8, 2009. This notice supersedes the announcement published on April 29, 2009, which instructed applicants to apply for grants using the Department of Education's e-Grant system. This notice instructs applicants to apply for grants, under this program, via the government-wide Grants.gov system.

I. Funding Opportunity Description

Purpose of Program: The U.S.-Russia Program encourages cooperative education programs between institutions of higher education (IHEs) in the Russian Federation and the United States of America. The objective of this program is to provide grants that demonstrate partnerships between Russian and American IHEs that contribute to the development and promotion of educational opportunities between the two nations. The aim is to use the educational content as the vehicle for learning languages, cultural appreciation, sharing knowledge, and forming long-term relationships between the two countries. In the context of the modern international society and a global economy, an understanding of the cultural context plays a vital role in education and training.

Thus, this program is designed to support the formation of educational consortia of American and Russian IHEs to encourage mutual socio-cultural-linguistic cooperation; the joint development of curricula, educational materials, and other types of educational and methodological activities; and related educational student and staff mobility (exchanges).

Russian institutions will apply to The Russian Ministry of Education and Science for funding.

Priority: Under this competition, we are particularly interested in applications that address the following priority.

Invitational Priority: For FY 2009, this priority is an invitational priority. Under 34 CFR 75.105(c)(1), we do not give an application that meets this invitational priority a competitive or absolute preference over other applications.

Applicants must select one academic discipline as the subject area for their grant proposal in this U.S.-Russia competition. For the year 2009, the Department and the Russian Ministry have jointly decided to make up to three awards, as follows:
(A) Environmental Science Studies--No more than one award.
(B) Biotechnology--No more than one award.
(C) Any discipline, other than (A) and (B)--No more than one award.

Applications are invited from institutions of higher education with the capacity to contribute to a collaborative project in the areas listed with a Russian institution. The consortium partners, through promoting the study of and communication in foreign languages, are expected to increase awareness and understanding of the two cultures, and to strengthen the professional and scholarly ties between the two countries.

The Russian institutions, as part of a U.S.-Russian consortium, will receive separate but equivalent funding from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

Program Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1138-1138d.

Applicable Regulations: The Education Department General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) in 34 CFR parts 74, 75, 77, 79, 80, 82, 84, 85, 86, 97, 98, and 99.

II. Award Information

Type of Award: Discretionary grants.

Estimated Available Funds: $400,000.

Estimated Range of Awards: $100,000-$150,000.

Estimated Average Size of Awards: $133,000.

Maximum Award: We will reject any application that proposes a budget exceeding $150,000 for a single budget period of 12 months. The Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education may change the maximum amount through a notice published in the Federal Register.

KATHRYN W. DAVIS GRADUATE STUDENT KATHRYN W. DAVIS GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL GRANT FOR 2009 AAASS CONVENTION

KATHRYN W. DAVIS GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL GRANT FOR 2009 AAASS CONVENTION

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Kathryn W. Davis’s generous donation to our organization, combined with matching donations from AAASS members, enables us to help subsidize travel costs for graduate students presenting papers at the 2009 AAASS Convention. We anticipate that we will be able to fund, on a competitive basis, 10 or more awards of up to $500 each. We are especially committed to subsidizing those graduate students who are attending the convention for the first time or who have no local institutional resources for travel support. Students may receive only ONE Davis Graduate Travel Grant over the course of their graduate studies.

Grant Provisions: The Davis Graduate Student Travel Grant is a merit- and need-based open competition. It will fund travel for graduate students presenting papers at the 2009 AAASS National Convention, which will be held in Boston, Massachusetts. Failure to attend the convention and present the paper will result in the forfeiture of the grant.

Eligibility: Two categories of students presenting a paper at the Convention are invited to apply: 1) Ph.D. students in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian fields who have already completed their master’s degrees; 2) students enrolled in a professional master’s program in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Please note that all panelists and roundtable participants must become members of AAASS in order to participate. Preference will be given to first-time presenters, though students who have presented in the past may also apply. Since our funding is limited and we wish to fund as many deserving applicants as possible, we urge applicants to be as practical as possible in estimating their travel and lodging budget – e.g., that they consider sharing a room with another graduate student at the convention hotel where this option is feasible.

Deadline for applications: March 31, 2009. All applicants will be notified of their status by April 30, 2009.

All applicants must submit the following materials:

1) Curriculum vitae;
2) Abstract of the paper to be presented at the convention;
3) Tentative budget;
4) Statement of need, describing anticipated travel costs and potential other sources of funding;
5) Letter of reference from advisor or department chair which includes confirmation that departmental and/or institutional conference travel funds are not sufficient.

Application materials should be sent by e-mail to the members of the selection committee and Wendy Walker at the AAASS office (walker@fas.harvard.edu).

The selection committee includes: Dmitry P. Gorenburg, Harvard U, (gorenbur@fas.harvard.edu), Beth Holmgren, Duke U (beth.holmgren@duke.edu), Cynthia Buckley, U of Texas, Austin, (cbuckley@mail.la.utexas.edu), Robert Weinberg, Swarthmore College, (rweinbe1@swarthmore.edu).

Funding: gendered health disparities

Applications due June 1, 2009

The Sisters Fund SMALL GRANT AWARDS
The University of Michigan

The Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) invites applications requesting support of scholarly activities directed to global health issues, specifically focused on gendered health disparities. The Sisters Fund seeks to enhance “activist” scholarship or other creative activities that benefit local and global communities experiencing gender-based health disparities. While providing funds for new and emerging work is a priority for this program, requests for support of on-going programs of research are also considered. Applications from all academic disciplines, including the arts, humanities and sciences, are welcome and encouraged.

Awards

Because this program has a very broad scope in terms of types of projects, we anticipate that funding requests will range widely in size. Funds may be requested from $500 to $10,000, depending on the scope of the project. We expect most awards to be in the lower end of the range. We encourage applications from those seeking matching funds or co-sponsorship from other sources, up to our limit. It is hoped that successful applicants will attend a Sisters Fund event in October 2009.

Eligibility

Tenure track, non-tenure track, or emeritus faculty, clinical faculty, research faculty, and librarians are eligible to submit applications. Applicants are encouraged to include students in project plans, but the principal investigator must not be a student. Normally applications will not be accepted from individuals who received awards in the last funding cycle. Members of the Institute’s Executive Committee are not eligible to submit applications.

Applications must be received no later than June 1, 2009 and must be submitted electronically. Please submit one PDF file. Alternatively, you may submit a Microsoft Word file and IRWG staff will convert your file to PDF.

Submit electronic applications to the following email address:

IRWG.Sisters.Fund.Grants@umich.edu

Please direct any questions concerning this program to Patricia Smith (pssmith@umich.edu or 764-9537)

or Dr. Janet Malley (jmalley@umich.edu or 734-764-9537).

Funding: collaborative research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia

Application Deadline: February 15, 2009.

Collaborative Research Fellowship, ACTR/ACCELS

ACTR/ACCELS and (NCEEER) with support from the National Endowment for
the Humanities, provides up to $40,000 for four to twelve months of
collaborative research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

The Collaborative Research Fellowship supports a wide range of
humanities topics including, but not limited to, linguistics,
literature, history, philosophy, archaeology, comparative religion,
ethics and the history criticism, and theory of the arts. Applicants
must hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree and have a working knowledge of one or more of the languages of East-Central Europe or Eurasia, or be able to demonstrate that such language proficiency is not critical for the successful completion of their particular projects. Additionally, all projects must involve at least one collaborator from the region.

Program organizers will make every effort to support the work of U.S.
humanists from fields under-represented in scholarship on East-Central
Europe and Eurasia. In the past, for example, American studies, art
history, comparative literature, cultural anthropology, musicology, and philosophy have been supported through the Collaborative Research Fellowship. All awards place a premium on the potential for further valuable humanistic collaboration beyond the specific award period of the NEH fellowship. American Councils and NCEEER encourage applications from scholars proposing innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to their subjects.

Applicants must propose to conduct at least four months of full-time
research, of which two months must be spent overseas. Scholars who are
able to begin their projects between May 2009 and May 2010 are welcome
to apply to this year's competition. U.S. citizenship, permanent
resident status, or residency in the U.S. for three years before date of application is required.

http://www.arts.cornell.edu/sochum/fellowships.html

The 2009-2010 research focal theme at Cornell University's Society for the Humanities is "Networks/Mobilities." Six to eight Fellows will be appointed.

Selected Fellows will collaborate with two Senior Scholars in Residence, Keller Easterling (Associate Professor of Architecture, Yale University), and Brian Massumi, Professor of Communications, University of Montreal.

The Society for the Humanities invites scholars to reflect upon the
theme of "Networks/Mobilities" in order to further understanding of
historical and contemporary flows of peoples, materials, images, and
ideas across physical and virtual boundaries. Relations of mobility and immobility, insofar as they are being reconfigured by broad-ranging new technologies of surveillance, detention, and legal/administrative regulation, are also germane to the theme. The Society encourages applicants to investigate the cultural, social, philosophical, and methodological implications of the theme. Fellows should be working on topics related to the year's theme.

Their approach to the humanities should be broad enough to appeal to
students and scholars in several humanistic disciplines. Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree before January 1, 2008.

The (postmark) application deadline is October 1, 2008. For complete program information and details on the application process, visit http://www.arts.cornell.edu/sochum/fellowships.html, call 607-255-9274,

All applicants should clearly describe the policy-relevance of their work, be it in anthropology, history, international relations, political science, or some other field. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
