Sushi--California Rolls

This time our cooking adventure didn't come from the pages of The Complete America's Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook. Instead, it originated in a healthy eating demonstration given by a friend at work. Many thanks to Brenda H. for her inspiring demo.

So on payday I shopped at a local Asian grocer, and got all the supplies: bamboo sushi-making mats, Nori (seaweed paper), sushi rice, black sesame seeds, powdered wasabi, sushi vinegar, and Sriracha hot sauce. At the Meijer store, I got fake crab meat (I call it K-rab), an avocado, and a cucumber.

Dooley was reluctant--he thought it would be way too much trouble, but I got everything prepped, and showed him how to put them together. I'll just say that we've had California rolls three times since then. We just love 'em! And really, they're amazingly simple to prepare. Also, I calculated the cost of all the ingredients--it only costs $5.50 to make four logs which are then cut up into four or five servings. So It costs only slightly more than a buck per person. Woohoo! Undeniably, if we were to buy other kinds of raw fish the price would go up, but with the K-rab, it's just amazingly affordable.

Hmmm. I think sushi sounds like a great idea for dinner tonight!!
