CICS - International Security and Development Fellow

The Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS) announces a call for applications for the 2008/2009 International Security and Development Fellowship. The fellowship is a one-year appointment that provides salary and/or research funding in the amount of $15,000. The fellowship is intended to promote undergraduate education on international security and/or development at U-M by developing a new course with significant international content and an interdisciplinary perspective. This course will initially be offered through the International Studies Minor and will subsequently become part of the curriculum of the fellow’s home department.

While not required, we hope to receive applications in which the faculty member and the departmental chair are in agreement that this course will become a permanent part of the department’s curriculum. We also encourage joint applications from members of two or more departments or units, in which case the applicants will divide the stipend.

ELIGIBILITY
U-M-Ann Arbor regular instructional staff, in any department, is eligible to apply.

REQUIREMENTS
During the year, the International Security and Development Fellow is expected to:
• develop and teach an undergraduate seminar on international security and/or cooperation for one semester, and (ideally) be committed to teaching it a second time in the foreseeable future
• give one public lecture

The amount of the fellowship is $15,000. The fellow will receive compensation up to a summer ninth for developing the new course. Required deductions for fringe benefits and taxes will be made. The remainder of the fellowship will be paid into her or his research fund. These funds may be used to support travel, materials, or to cover the costs of bringing guest speakers to the course. Total compensation will not exceed $15,000.

APPLICATION
Those wishing to apply should submit:
• Completed CICS funding request cover sheet including the signatures of all relevant chairs and directors in the applicant’s department, agreeing that, if selected, the department will give serious consideration to including the course in the permanent curriculum
• CV
• Brief statement describing a possible course topic and articulating the potential student audience, relation to current departmental curriculum or interdisciplinary teaching initiatives (no more than 500 words)
• Statement of purpose describing the applicant’s international security and cooperation-related experience and reasons for applying (1-3 pages)
• Additional materials, such as a scholarly paper or book chapter, grant proposal, or a relevant report of a research project (optional)
