The Palestine Center summer internship program is designed to provide undergraduates with hands-on experience in a DC-based nonprofit organization that focuses exclusively on Palestine and U.S. policy towards the Middle East. This program is based in our main office, located within walking distance from the U.S. Department of State, K street lobbyist corridor, Embassy Row, historic Georgetown and Dupont Circle.
Summer interns coordinate the annual summer lecture series, follow the news daily on happenings in Israel and Palestine and write an in-depth information brief on a topic related to the Palestine issue. Through their experiences, interns obtain invaluable leadership, research and writing skills, as well as exposure to the Washington political and foreign policy communities. Interns are expected to manage all aspects of the lecture series and base its planning and publicity on current events in the region. They select lecture topics for experts to address and organize the logistics of each event. Additionally, interns are expected to compile background readings and facilitate discussions with the invited experts at the lecture series. Interns assist Palestine Center staff with general programming events and office work and are encouraged to attend foreign policy-related briefings at outside organizations and on the Hill during their internship.
This program is highly competitive and intended to foster deeper understandings about Palestine among American students while enabling interns to develop their knowledge of the region and their skills for a future career in a related field. The Palestine Center staff provide guidance on research and logistics, help to educate interns on the Palestine issue and advise them as needed on career development. Students receive a small stipend based on performance, as well as career guidance and networking opportunities.

CICS - International Security and Development Fellow

DEADLINE
Applications are due April 10, 2008

The Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS) announces a call for applications for the 2008/2009 International Security and Development Fellowship. The fellowship is a one-year appointment that provides salary and/or research funding in the amount of $15,000. The fellowship is intended to promote undergraduate education on international security and/or development at U-M by developing a new course with significant international content and an interdisciplinary perspective. This course will initially be offered through the International Studies Minor and will subsequently become part of the curriculum of the fellow’s home department.

While not required, we hope to receive applications in which the faculty member and the departmental chair are in agreement that this course will become a permanent part of the department’s curriculum. We also encourage joint applications from members of two or more departments or units, in which case the applicants will divide the stipend.

ELIGIBILITY
U-M-Ann Arbor regular instructional staff, in any department, is eligible to apply.

REQUIREMENTS
During the year, the International Security and Development Fellow is expected to:
• develop and teach an undergraduate seminar on international security and/or cooperation for one semester, and (ideally) be committed to teaching it a second time in the foreseeable future
• give one public lecture

The amount of the fellowship is $15,000. The fellow will receive compensation up to a summer ninth for developing the new course. Required deductions for fringe benefits and taxes will be made. The remainder of the fellowship will be paid into her or his research fund. These funds may be used to support travel, materials, or to cover the costs of bringing guest speakers to the course. Total compensation will not exceed $15,000.

• Completed CICS funding request cover sheet including the signatures of all relevant chairs and directors in the applicant’s department, agreeing that, if selected, the department will give serious consideration to including the course in the permanent curriculum
• CV
• Brief statement describing a possible course topic and articulating the potential student audience, relation to current departmental curriculum or interdisciplinary teaching initiatives (no more than 500 words)
• Statement of purpose describing the applicant’s international security and cooperation-related experience and reasons for applying (1-3 pages)
• Additional materials, such as a scholarly paper or book chapter, grant proposal, or a relevant report of a research project (optional)

Teachers of Critical Languages Program

American Councils continues to be privileged to administer the Teachers of Critical Languages Program of the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. We are pleased to announce that applications to host Chinese or Arabic exchange teachers during the 2008-2009 school year are available. Applications can be downloaded from either www.americancouncils.org or www.tclprogram.org.

TCLP is a great program that looks to build US schools' capacities to offer Chinese and Arabic programs as these languages are indeed critically important for both the current and future generation. Moreover, both China and the Middle East have rich, vibrant, and deep cultures and histories, and our students can learn a great deal from them. Reciprocally, our exchange teachers can learn a great deal about American culture while improving their English and gaining experience in teaching methodologies. All said, it's a great cross-cultural program that really does benefit all parties involved.

From a school's perspective, the program provides many benefits, as well as numerous opportunities.
• American Councils provides exchange teachers' monthly salaries, health care, round-trip airfare, visa support, extended training in DC before the school year, a four-day professional development workshop in November, access to a professional development fund for exchange teachers to acquire training, textbooks, or materials as are relevant to their situations, and ongoing on-program support including in-person site visits
• TCLP includes alumni grant opportunities for exchange teachers and host schools when they "graduate" from the program in June 2009 so that continued collaboration, cross-cultural exchange, and classroom partnerships can be supported
• US elementary or secondary schools, both public and private, may apply
• Applications are welcomed from schools with existing, developing, or planned programs

Foreign Language Writing Instruction: Principles and Practices

The Symposium on Second Language Writing is an international conference that brings together teachers and researchers who work with second- and foreign-language writers to discuss important issues in the field of second language writing. The Symposium on Second Language Writing began in 1998 at Purdue University as a way to facilitate the advancement of knowledge in the field of L2 writing and to build a sense of community among those who are involved in L2 writing research and instruction.

Symposium: Friday & Saturday, June 6-7, 2008

Much of the work on L2 writing has done in the second language (SL) context, a context in which the L2 is the dominant language. This work has overshadowed work on L2 writing done in the foreign language (FL) context, a context in which the L2 is not the dominant language. The purpose of this symposium is to begin to remedy this situation by showcasing work done in FL (including EFL) writing. There will be keynote speakers who will address current issues in FL writing and invited speakers who will address FL writing instruction in their institutional settings, describing their institutional contexts, the writing instruction that takes place in those contexts, and the principles that underlie that instruction. We feel that this program will be of interest to both FL and SL writing professionals.

AFS Intercultural Programs

AFS-USA is seeking applications from outstanding high school students to spend six weeks studying Arabic in Egypt this summer, from June 28 - August 10. The AFS Arabic Summer Language Institute is designed to give students an intensive introduction to Arabic and immersion into Egyptian culture. They will have the experience of a lifetime living with an Egyptian host family, visiting cultural and historic sites, and being a part of this ancient culture. Pending funding, AFS is offering 30 full-tuition scholarships!

Syracuse University - Middle East Studies Post Doctoral Fellowship

Deadline: April 21, 2008

The Middle Eastern Studies Program at Syracuse University is pleased to announce the availability of a Post-Doctoral Fellowship for the 2008-09 academic year. The fellowship will support a recent PhD scholar working on topics related to governance or international affairs in the Middle East. The fellowship period includes one academic year ( August 15 - May 15), plus one summer month (May 15 - June 15, 2009) with strong potential to extend a second year. The fellows will receive a stipend of $33,500 plus fringe benefits that provide health benefits through August 15, 2009. The fellowships are not restricted based on discipline.

Applicants must have completed a PhD between January 1, 2004 and July 1, 2008 from an accredited university in the United States, Europe or the Middle East and preferably have competence in Arabic. The fellowship requires residence at Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York) from August 2008 - May 2009. The fellow will be given library privileges at Syracuse University and office space within the Maxwell School's Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs (http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/moynihan/).

The duties of the fellow will include the following:

Standard Turkish Group Courses 2007-2008

From September 2007 till June 2008 EF offers Standard Turkish Group Courses for foreigners living in Turkey.

1. "Smart Ladies" – morning courses (STMC 10).
These morning courses are mainly delivered from 10:00 to 14:00 and continue for 10 weeks consisting of 10 academic hours of tuition per week (2 days x 4 hours of class tuition in the morning and 2 hours of free conversation lessons on Fridays mornings).

This course is a proper and efficient language course for foreign students with lots of grammar, structure, writing exercises,interactive activities, dialogues and daily language practices. Additionally students will cover cultural awareness sessions, office language, dialogues and terminology.

Intensive Turkish Group Courses 2008

Due to the enormous demand for Intensive courses, EF Language Centre is offering “Intensive Turkish Group Course – ITGC 20” course. For foreigners with limited time for language training we recommend this intensive program to gain the maximum benefit from their stay in Istanbul and maximum exposure to the Turkish language and culture.
Our ITGC 20 provides 4 hours of tuition each day (from Mondays to Fridays) with an hour free for lunch. Many students favor this training as it allows them to complete half a level over 2 weeks and progress effectively and quickly. Students may also enroll for a longer period – 4,6,8 – 12 weeks.

In June 2008, the Swedish Writers’ Union will inaugurate WALTIC – the Value of Words, the first literary world congress of its kind. Between 29 June and 2 July 2008 one thousand writers, translators and scholars involved in shaping public opinion will gather for a mutual manifestation of the value of words and in support of human rights.

The story of the world – past, present and future – is being rewritten and retold as scholars and intellectuals interrogate and challenge traditional notions of value, beauty and truth. The master’s story is revealed to be but one voice in a multilingual choir that sings of joys, sorrows and resistance. And listening to the dissonance of human existence, the scholar asks, in the words of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak; what does this mean?

The value of words – be they written or spoken – resides in the heart and soul of the listener, and becomes manifest in dialogue. Alongside authors of fiction, WALTIC invites scholars and intellectuals to partake in this dialogue, who have, through their works, changed our way of listening for ever. To enable this dialogue to prevail, the unique Socratic Dialogue program during WALTIC 2008 has chosen to focus on three urgent global issues: Literacy, Intercultural dialogue and Digitalization.

“The Bionic Episteme", by Professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (Columbia University, USA): In order for digitalization to succeed, the steps leading to the wise use of digital practice must be available to everyone and anyone, since digitalization is potentially available to everyone and anyone. We are not ready for digitalization alone. Making that wisdom available to anyone and everyone means a very strong focus on pre- post- and para-digital education. This takes time. It can only be done by deep language learning, careful training in textual encounters, as well as and, at the same time, the education of children into the rituals and habits of democratic practice. In her WALTIC speech, Professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (India/USA) will outline how this will be done. Professor Muniz Sodré (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) responds.

“Hidden Histories of Literacy in Africa”, by Professor Karin Barber (University of Birmingham, UK): Local, popular uses of reading and writing in Africa began from the moment literacy and print were established, Professor Karin Barber (UK) argues in her WALTIC lecture. She points out that in Anglophone West Africa this initiative was fuelled by do-it-yourself schools, reading circles and local publications run off by small jobbing printers. Obscure individuals wrote down oral traditions, kept gargantuan diaries and engaged in prolific correspondence. They also invented new vernacular literary genres. With the expansion of primary school education in the second half of the twentieth century, these initiatives blossomed into a diverse and thriving new vernacular popular culture on the border zone between orality and literacy, the local and the global. Professor Eileen Julien (Indiana University, USA) responds.

SUMMER 2008 RESEARCH ANALYST POSITIONS

The U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) has recently established a Washington, DC area unclassified open source analysis unit to conduct research related to national security issues and is seeking undergraduate and graduate student summer research analysts who can conduct native language research on the Internet, apply social science research methods to identify social and political trends, and critically analyze and present information. Positions are also available for science and technology majors to conduct Internet research and test new applications/tools.

Students majoring in the following areas are encouraged to apply: Middle Eastern Studies, Persian Studies, South Asian Studies, Asian Studies, Russian Studies, Comparative Politics, International Relations, National Security Studies, Intelligence Studies, Economics, Political Economy, Cultural Anthropology, Comparative Sociology, Demography, Nuclear Engineering/Physics, Computer Science/Engineering, Defense Studies, Social Psychology, Public Policy, History, Political Geography, Library Science/Information Management, and Geographic Information Systems

COMPENSATION:

Hourly rate will be commensurate with education and experience. Positions are for a 40 hour week for a maximum of 10 weeks. There are no benefits other than free parking. The location is not accessible by public transportation.

2008-2009 Call for Applications

The Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS) announces a not-for-credit seminar for master's students and doctoral students at the pre-candidacy level intending to pursue field-based research outside the United States.

ELIGIBILITY
This seminar is open to students in the early stages of graduate training with interests in international and area studies who can demonstrate goals of completing training and research through the doctorate. Graduate students from across disciplines are invited to apply.

PURPOSE
The Graduate Seminar on Global Transformations offers students the opportunity to develop theses projects, pre-dissertation proposals, and dissertation prospectuses with their peers, in an interdisciplinary setting. The goals of the seminar include:

· Increasing students' capacity for understanding research designs and systems of evidence developed in other professions and disciplines

· Examining issues of ethics and values in the development and conduct of cross-cultural and cross-national research

· Encouraging high-level critical discussion of methodology and epistemology

· Discussing different qualities and characteristics of data in international research.


ORGANIZATION

The seminar will explore epistemological connections and dissonance among disciplines and professions involved in global transformations. It will meet approximately seven times a term for two-hour sessions, which will be organized around the discussion of presentations by participating students. Several sessions will also be devoted to the discussion of papers, research proposals, and faculty and visitor presentations.

Each student admitted to GSGT will have access to a restricted research fund of up to $4,500, to be used for a preliminary visit to the prospective foreign research site and for specialized language training necessary for dissertation research.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
Students must commit to participating in the seminar for three terms, and will be expected to make a presentation to the group following their research trip, and to discuss methodology, challenges, and results with seminar participants.

APPLICATION

§ Completed CICS funding request cover sheet

§ Two- to three-page letter that addresses the purpose of the seminar

§ Two letters of support from a faculty advisor and/or departmental director of graduate studies

Members of the CICS advisory board will determine admission to the GSGT program.

IREX FELLOWSHIP – 2008-2009 US Embassy Policy Specialist (EPS) Program

IREX is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 competition of the US Embassy Policy Specialist (EPS) Program.

The US Embassy Policy Specialist Program will allow fellows to travel to Eurasia and serve the embassy as policy specialists on a chosen topic and also pursue their own research project independently. Fellowships are available to successful applicants who demonstrate how their experience, skills, and knowledge will benefit US embassy personnel, as well as the academic merit and feasibility of their proposed research. Fellows will serve the embassy and conduct their own research for up to eight weeks. Fellowship length and dates will be decided upon in consultation with the specific embassy. Examples of embassy service can include conducting field research, writing policy papers, consulting embassy staff, and assisting with grant panels.

Fellows will be sponsored by IREX. Depending on the needs of the individual embassy, fellows may spend all or part of the time on-site at the embassy or work from a remote location in country. The EPS Program provides fellowships for up to eight weeks to US postdoctoral scholars and other graduate degree holders for independent or collaborative research projects in Europe and Eurasia.

Policy-Connect Collaborative Research Grants

IREX is pleased to announce the 2008 Policy-Connect Collaborative Research Grants competition. IREX’s Policy-Connect program seeks to attract, select, and support advanced research by US experts in policy-relevant subject areas related to Southeast Europe and Eurasia, facilitate collaboration among and between US and international scholars, and disseminate knowledge about Europe and Eurasia to a wide network of constituents in the United States and abroad.

Policy-Connect provides American scholars with the means and support necessary to conduct research, particularly on lesser-studied regions such as the Balkans, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, where issues central to the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States must be studied. The knowledge and expertise gained by the grant recipients become a valuable resource for the policymaking community, as the scholars share the results of their research through research briefs, policy fora, and individual meetings.


The Policy-Connect Program provides fellowships to US scholars and professionals for overseas research on contemporary political, economic, historical, or cultural developments relevant to US foreign policy. Fellowships support collaborative teams of two or three US scholars and professionals for up to 12 months. Upon completion of the project, scholars will be requested to present their research findings at a Policy Forum at the US Department of State and to write a policy brief.


This year applications will be accepted for research on the following topics and regions:


Eurasia* & Southeast Europe**: Ethnic and religious conflict, terrorism, transition economics, access to information, youth and women’s issues, human rights, citizen participation in politics and civil society, and issues related to the final status of Kosovo.


Cross-regional: Post-Soviet relations between Eurasia and the countries of Middle East/North Africa and/or Asia.


*Eligible countries of research for Eurasia include: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan


**Eligible countries of research for Southeast Europe include: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia (Former Yugoslav Republic of), and Serbia and Montenegro.

Grant Award: Up to $30,000

Duration: Up to 12 months
