Department of Near Eastern Studies - Available Position: Assistant Professor of Turkish Studies
The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona invites applications for a tenure-track position in Turkish Studies at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in the fall semester 2009. A Ph.D. upon date of hire is strongly preferred, a demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching is required, but the area of specialization is open. Teaching requirements in the Turkish Studies program will include advanced Turkish language and courses about modern Turkish culture, literature and society. These courses would complement existing courses in Ottoman history, the anthropological study of Turkey, Turkish language and linguistics, and would expand departmental offerings. The successful candidate will teach upper level courses in the Turkish language, courses in his or her field (or interdisciplinary courses) at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and participate in general education/social science or humanities courses as needed. Competence in Ottoman Turkish will be regarded as an asset. The department seeks to hire a candidate who is able to work with diverse students and colleagues and one who is familiar with a variety of teaching methods. She/he will play a key role in developing a coherent Turkish studies program at the University of Arizona. We encourage early submission of materials to arrange for preliminary telephone interviews and/or preliminary interviews at the November MESA meeting in Washington, D.C. Review of application materials will begin October 15, 2008 and continue until the position is filled.
As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, the University of Arizona recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences, perspectives and backgrounds- M/W/D/V. The position is contingent upon availability of funding.
