University of Texas - Assistant Professor of Turkish Cultural Studies

The University of Texas at Austin invites scholars to apply for an Assistant Professor or early Associate Professor of Turkish Cultural Studies in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies. The successful applicant will be expected to take up the position beginning Fall 2009. Position funding is pending budgetary approval.

The successful applicant will have overall responsibility for directing the Turkish program, and will be involved in the development of a long-term strategic plan to enhance Turkish Studies, including Turkish culture and language, at The University of Texas. Applicants must have native or near native proficiency in Turkish and will be expected to maintain strong professional ties with colleagues in Turkish Studies particularly specialists in Turkish language pedagogy. The applicant will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses that attract student interest in Turkish Studies, and ensure that language instruction is supported by a curriculum that makes contemporary Turkish culture accessible to students. While the focus of the position is Turkish culture, the successful applicant will be expected to coordinate the Turkish language program, and teach Turkish language courses as program needs dictate, particularly at the advanced level.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong record of research and publications and engage in service to the Department, the University, and profession. The Department places a high premium on collegiality and maintaining a diverse and hospitable working environment. The applicants will be expected to work with colleagues in the routine governance of the Department and in program building, and help strengthen ties with other scholars interested in Turkish Studies across the campus.

Applicants must have a PhD in hand at the time of appointment. Preference will be given to applicants with disciplinary training in cultural studies, anthropology, media studies, literature, sociolinguistics, or other fields related to teaching and research on contemporary Turkish culture and the Turkish experience with modernity. Candidates must demonstrate a record of and agenda for research contributions to the field of Turkish Studies and must have a record of excellence in teaching at the college level.

Review of applications will begin November 7, 2008 with the intention of conducting preliminary interviews at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association in Washington D.C., November 22-25, 2008.
