NATO Parliamentary Assembly - Middle East Research Fellows Wanted

6 months - 1 year long paid position of Mediterranean Research Fellow at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Applications for the position, which starts in January 2010, should be received by 25 October 2009.

This is an excellent work opportunity in an international organization for those who have recently completed their Masters or Ph.D. degrees in international affairs and similar fields. Please note that we would like one of the six researchers to have a strong background in Middle Eastern Affairs to work with our Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group (GSM). The GSM provides a forum for parliamentarians from NATO countries and the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) to discuss political and security issues and enhance co-operation. The successful candidate will work with the GSM Director and with other members of the team to research and produce reports on security, conflict, political and governance related to the Middle East region as well as on issues on broader issues of trans-Atlantic concern. Main responsibilities will include: providing analysis on key political, social and security issues affecting the Middle East region; drafting and editing Committee reports; preparing briefing papers and speeches setting out report findings and policy recommendations; and providing administrative support for the organization of Committee visits. Profile requirements: Master’s degree or PhD in international or comparative politics, middle eastern studies, security studies, or related social science discipline; in depth knowledge of wider Middle East issues; working experience in an international setting, preferably with an international organization and/or NATO; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; excellent writing and analytical skills; ability to work closely with a team as well as independently; fluency in English and French, knowledge of Arabic highly preferred.
