Northwestern University - Assistant Professor Position Available
Northwestern University seeks to hire a scholar in modern and/or contemporary Middle Eastern literature / literary and cultural studies. The successful candidate will work in one or more primary languages of the majority-Muslim countries of the Middle East and North Africa (i.e., Arabic, Persian/Farsi, Turkish). Applications from candidates conducting comparative scholarship—linguistically, regionally, and/or disciplinarily—are especially welcome.
This newly-created position, at the rank of assistant professor (tenure track), is part of Northwestern University's major and on-going expansion of Middle East and North African Studies. The new hire will be jointly appointed between an appropriate disciplinary home (a department or program) and the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities (see: http://www.humanities.northwestern.edu/), and will be a core member of the Middle East and North African Studies group (MENA). MENA is a faculty collective of scholars hailing from diverse parts of the university whose collaborative activities include conferences, working groups, speakers’ series and the development of a vibrant MENA curriculum for Northwestern (see: http://www.bcics.northwestern.edu/groups/mena/).
Please submit a letter of application (including a description of research and short career overview), CV, and an article-length sample of work (published or in manuscript), all in electronic form (doc or pdf format) to the search chair at email@example.com. Applicants must also arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent as hard (paper) copies to the address below. To guarantee full consideration, applications must be received by October 15, 2009.
We anticipate interviewing short-listed candidates at the 2009 meeting of the Middle East Studies Association in Boston in November. Please indicate in your cover letter whether you plan to attend.
