ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Turkey
The American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) will offer fellowships for research in Turkey for the academic year 2011-2012. Grants for tenures up to one year will be considered, however, some preference is given to projects of shorter duration. ARIT operates hostel, research, and study facilities for researchers in Turkey and its branch centers in Istanbul and Ankara.
Application Deadline:
Applications and three letters of recommendation must be received by November 1, 2010. Please use the ARIT application format accessible on the ARIT website [http//ccat.sas.upenn.edu/ARIT/NEHFellowships.htm] and submit all materials to the address below. The ARIT Committee on Fellowships expects to notify applicants of its decision by late January 2011.
Eligibilty Requirements:
Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey, in any field of the humanities and social sciences, are eligible. Student applicants must have fulfilled all preliminary requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2011, and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research. Non-U.S. applicants are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the United States or Canada. Scholars who have completed their formal training may also apply for ARIT Fellowships sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (described in separate announcements). For questions of eligibility and procedures, please check with the ARIT office in Philadelphia.
Research Permission:
ARIT fellowship applicants are responsible for obtaining the appropriate research permissions and visas. In general, researchers should seek permission to carry out research from the director(s) of the institution(s) where they intend to work; this includes researchers who wish to work in libraries housed in Turkish museums. For short term research tenures some foreign scholars may enter Turkey on a tourist visa and apply for the research permit and visa from within Turkey; or scholars may choose to procure a research visa via the Turkish Embassy in advance of their arrival. Scholars wishing to carry out research in Turkey for terms longer than three months should apply for the research permit and in addition secure a research vise prior to entering Turkey. Non-U.S. researchers should consult the Turkish Consulate for specific procedures. Researchers who wish to work with collections housed in the Turkish archaeological museums, however, should make their application through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums. In addition, if the material they wish to work with is part of and excavation, researchers must submit a letter with their application that is signed by the excavation director giving permission to carry out the research. The application regulations and format for researchers are posted on the ARIT website. ARIT may withhold payment of fellowship stipends if appropriate research permission is not gained.
