Summer Course on Refugee and Forced Migration Issues

The Centre for Refugee Studies at York University, Toronto, Canada is offering its eight-day Summer Course on Refugee and Forced Migration Issues for its 15th consecutive year from May 8 - May 15, 2011. The full course days will run from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

The summer course is open to both academics and practitioners seeking to expand their knowledge of contemporary critical elements of forced migration/refugee issues. Participants range from government officials and NGO personnel to university faculty and graduate students. Undergraduate students can apply if they will be finishing their degree by the time the course begins. Applicants must have good to excellent English speaking and reading skills. No translation services are available.

The summer course provides:
-A York University--Centre for Refugee Studies Summer Course Certificate
-An interdisciplinary, interactive and experiential approach to the study of forced migration and refugee issues
-A comparative global approach that exposes participants to the different perspectives of scholars and field-based specialists from Canada and abroad
-Highlights from research and practical work in different regions including North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia
-A blend of well-respected academics and practitioners with an excellent national and international track record of research, policy engagement and publications

Summer course topics include:
-UNHCR, the Convention and the International refugee regime
-UNRWA and Palestian Refugees
-Sexuality and gender issues
-Environmentally induced displacement
-Protection of internally displaced persons
-Root causes of forced migration
-Refugee resettlement policy
-Forced displacement: international case studies
-The future of forced migration

The course fee is $1200 (canadian dollars). Visa applicants must register by February 28th, 2011 and non-visa applicants by April 30th, 2011.
