Emergency Preparedness Plan and Communications
It's important to be prepared for emergencies- whether a weather emergency, an electrical failure, or any other type of system failure, we at MWRC need to know what to do when our usual means of communication and movement through the building are compromised. In order to ensure that staff and volunteers are prepared for an emergency, I will be posting resources to this intranet, and also going over emergency plans on an individual basis with staff and volunteers, so that we all know what to do (or where to look for instructions) in the event that we need to use emergency procedures and communication channels.
Emergency fire and safety information are posted and are always available in my office in the MWRC. I invite you to review these resources and make yourself aware of emergency exits and evacuation plans for the Center.
UMHS has compiled a list of helpful resources available online at:
In the event of system failures, here is a list of contacts and procedures that have been established by UMHS:

Hello from the new MWRC Librarian
I wanted to post a quick introduction to myself, Alexandra Sarkozy, the new MWRC Patient Education Librarian. I'm excited to be here: I am already learning the ropes, and I'm especially looking forward to working with the wonderful staff and collections at the Wellness Resource Center.
I most recently worked in the research library at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where I worked with doctors and research scientists conducting literature searches, selecting materials, teaching classes on databases and research management, and creating subject guides on a range of hospital, cancer, research and technology topics. Previously, I worked as a science reference librarian at Brooklyn Public Library, where I helped maintain and provided access to a large collection of books and electronic resources on science, social science, philosophy, psychology and medicine, including consumer health.
I graduated from the School of Information ten years ago, and it feels good to be back at UofM!
Thank you, everyone, for the warm welcome. Watch this space for more updates!

Influenza Program (UMHS)
UMHS volunteers and employees are encouraged to get the flu vaccine early for protection for the entire season. We should not endanger our vulnerable patients by exposing them to flu virus while they receive care from us. There is no charge for flu shots for UMHS employees and volunteers. Below is the current schedule for October.
Flu clinics held at UMHS:
October 23 11:00 am - 5:00 pm Dining Rooms A & B
October 28 10:00 am - 4:00 pm CVC, room 4317
October 29 9:30 am - 1:00 pm Cancer Center, room B1286
More flu clinics and information about the flu will be added as the season progresses, so please check the Influenza Program website for updates.
H1N1 Flu Shots:
When the H1N1 flu shot becomes available, OHS will offer vaccination for this as well. More information about H1N1 vaccine, supply and opportunities for vaccination should be known in early October, so please check back to see what additional information has been posted on the Influenza Program website.

We recently updated the Intranet to include the volunteer contact information database. It is accessible through the "Resources & Contact lists" section of the Intranet.
When you click on the page "Volunteers Contact Info" you will get a search form where you can enter a term and do a search. You can search by first and last names, as well by by shift (day of the week) and type of volunteer (to restrict your search to a reference or an iPod Squad volunteer). Since this is on the Intranet now, you can access it from home and we hope that it will make it easier to find replacements.
I hope you like this new feature,

MIOSHA Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illness report
In compliance with MIOSHA posting requirements, the MIOSHA Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illness report (MIOSHA Form 300A) must be posted in an area accessible to employees from February 1, 2009 through April 30, 2009.
I posted the document on the Intranet at:

Please note the passwords to access the EOS catalog have been changed. Please check the Volunteers page on the Intranet to find out the passwords.
e-Books in the catalog
Our new catalog has enabled us to catalog e-books. If you select e-book as a media when you do a search, you will find a record with a URL that connects to the e-book. So far I only cataloged a few encyclopedias, so if you search for an * and the media e-book it will bring you the list of all e-books currently in our catalog.
I hope to add more e-books in the future.
