Kids and Teens iPod Program starting

Finally - we are ready to launch the kids & teens Sight & Sound program. This means that starting Monday Jan. 5, we will get requests for the kids & teens iPods at the PERC. Also starting Jan. 6, the iPod Squad will also visit the pediatric infusion area and offer devices to kids, teens and their siblings.

The Kids and Teens content package includes music, audiobooks, podcasts and games. The music, audiobooks, and podcasts are arranged by age groups. There are also a few genre playlists. Please take a minute to review the kids & teens content sheet to become famliar with it. We have five iPod touch devices with the kids & teens programming. To tell them apart from the adult iPods, the Kids & Teens iPods have a yellow label.

We also have a young Kids content package - this is a subset of the Kids and Teens content package. This content package is uploaded on nano iPods and should be offered only for the 3-5 and 6-8 age groups. (who do not need to use the Internet). These nanos also have a yellow label.

When you check out a kids & teens iPod please hand the patron the Kids & Teens content sheet - not the adult content sheet. Please also provide the right Kids & Teens evaluation form. We have two types of evaluations forms for the kids & teens:
1. an evaluation form for parents who have young children who can't fill out the form themselves.
2. an evaluation form that can be filled out by the child or teen who used the device (it can be the patient or a sibling).

We also created separate surveys on surveymonkey.com to input the data from the evaluations into the online surveys.

Thank you so much for helping us to launch this program. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Update to UMHS infection control policy

This entry is relevant only to iPod Squad volunteers

The UMHS recently updated their infection control policy with regards to hands washing and it applies to all staff, including volunteers.

The policy states that:

Hand hygiene shall be performed in each of the following situations:
Upon entering and leaving a patient room (ex: inpatient, procedure room).
Before and after each patient contact.
Between patient contacts if more than one patient in the room.
Before and after contact with patients who are not in a room (ex: on a stretcher, in open bays, etc.).

For us this means that iPod Squad volunteers will need to cleanse their hands with Purell when they arrive at the floor (before they enter the first patient's room) and after each iPod checkout. If the volunteer entered the room and talked with patients, but did not check an iPod, they would not have to cleanse their hands again.
Please let us know if you have an questions.

Thank you,

Dear volunteers,

Please make sure to review the DO NOT LEND list every time you start a shift. Some individuals have lost their iPod checkout privileges and we must make sure they do not check out an iPod again. The DO NOT LEND list is taped inside the checkout clipboard. If someone on the list wants to check out a device, please let them know that you are not able to check it out to them because they lost their loan privileges. They can talk with me about renewing these privileges again.
