While I am Away . . .

This entry should be read by both PERC Staff Volunteers and iPod Squad Volunteers.

Hello Volunteers:

As most of you know, I will be on vacation Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31. If anything urgent happens during your shift or if you are unable to make your shift, please PAGE Ruti (936-6266, Page ID #8583); for non-urgent matters, please send me an email or leave me a note and I will respond upon my return.

Please notify Ruti if you encounter any problems retrieving iPods. This includes the inability of an iPod volunteer to visit the In-Patient floor to retrieve/exchange iPods from current borrowers.

Also, if for some reason you are unable to open at 9:00 and you cannot reach Ruti via the Paging System, please page Melissa Dymond (Patient Education Administrative Assistant) by dialing 936-6266, ID#32605. Likewise, if you are running late for your 1:00 shift, please notify the volunteer you are relieving regarding your status. (Procedures for closing the PERC during regular hours are documented on the PERC Intranet.)

iPod Volunteers, if you arrive prior to the PERC being open, please request the key to open the PERC from the clerk(s) at Reception B. In addition, if you are running late or unable to make your shift, please contact the PERC staff (by calling 647-8626) to alert them to your status.

Thank you all for your hard work -- I will see you the week of August 3!

Fax Machine - Out of Order

Hello Volunteers:

Please be advised that the PERC fax machine is currently unable to RECEIVE faxes or make copies. Faxes can still be sent from this machine.

Until the PERC machine is either repaired or replaced, faxes for the PERC are being forwarded to the fax machine located in the Patient Billing area (located behind Reception Area B).

While I am away next week, please stop at this machine and check for PERC faxes. If each volunteer checks for faxes at the start of their shift, we should not have any delays in processing fax requests.

Thanks for your help!

Congratuations to Ruti - Recipient of Medical Library Association Award

Hello Volunteers:

Please join me in congratulating Ruti Volk, recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Consumer Health Information Service Award. Ruti received this award from the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section of the Medical Library Association. Selected for her many outstanding contributions to the field of consumer health librarianship, Ruti is certainly deserving of this award. It's great when deserving people are recognized!

Request for Chemotherapy Packets - Procedure Change

Hello Volunteers.

Please take a moment to review the PERC Intranet Site: https://sitemaker.umich.edu/percintranet/chemo_information_packets

The change to the procedure occurs in the final paragraph. Mailing of packets to patients whose first treatment is more than 7 days away will now be handled at the PERC; please forward these requests to me.

You will only need to fax the information to Patient Education if the patient's first visit is less than one week away. I have also modified the Chemotherapy Request Form to reflect this most recent change.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Early Arrival at the PERC

Hello iPod Volunteers,

If you arrive at the PERC for your shift and the PERC is not open, you may retrieve a key to open the PERC at Reception Desk B (across from the elevators).

Once the door is open, please return the key to Reception Desk B. When opening the door and removing the key, please make sure that the door will lock automatically when it is closed.

If you have any questions regarding the key or locking the door, please let me know.

Items for Review

Hello Volunteers,

I wanted to take a few moments to review some basic PERC rules:

1. No eating is allowed in the PERC. Patients, visitors, staff and volunteers are not permitted to eat in the library.

2. Beverages can be consumed in the PERC. However, it is strongly encouraged that beverages be in containers with lids; extra care should be used when consuming beverages near the computers.

3. Cell phone usage in the PERC is not permitted.

4. Patrons may print up to 50 pages per day from the PERC computers.

5. Please ask patrons visiting computer sites with sound to use the headphones or earbuds provided.

If you have any questions, please let me know!
