A message from Volunteer Services

Dear Volunteers
The Volunteer Services office asked us to remind our current volunteers to check the date on their ID badge...badges need to be updated annually. If your badge is more than one year old please visit the volunteer services office to update your credentials. Its a very quick process.

Also, if you ever forget your ID badge at home, please get a temporary one at the Mott Badging Desk by the Mott West elevators.

Thanks,

-Ruti

Lets fight the flu

Dear Volunteers,

In preperation for the flu season we will implement a new infection control policy at the PERC:

Visitors are asked to sanitize their hands before they use a computer. Please note the new poster on the PERC counter.

Voluneers:
please sanitize your hands and clean the phone, keyboards, mice, mouse pads, and counter area near the computers with a wipe at the beginning of the AM shift. PM volunteers should sanitize hands and clean the keyboard, mouse, mouse pad and counter area near the staff computer only.

Please help us to win the fight against the flu. This U-Tube video is great to "get in the spirit" :)

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Breast Cancer Annex - Level 1

Hello Volunteers:

The Breast Care Clinic located on level 1 of the building now has its own resource area for brochures and and handouts about breast cancer. This area is located to the right (as you step off) of the elevators on Level 1. The "Breast Cancer Resource Annex" is actually part of the PERC, but has space to display a lot more brochures and handounts about breast cancer than we are able to keep at the PERC.

The Breast Cancer Annex enabled us to reduce the number of breast cancer publications we display at the PERC. We still have a few basic ones, but it is a good idea to refer patients upstairs if they are looking for breast cancer information. ("if you would like more breast cancer brochures and handouts please visit our Annex on level 1") The shelve space we gained enabled us to shift the brochures around and display them better.

The Breast Cancer Annex is not staffed and patrons still need to come to the PERC if they want to check out books, iPods, DVD's and music CD's, request an expert search or pick up information guides. We have signs in the Annex referring patrons to the PERC to take advantage of our other services.

If you get a chance, we encourage you take a few minutes to visit this area so you are better able to assist our patients and visitors.

Please let me know if you have any questions and, again, thank you for all your help.

-Lori & Ruti

Calendar

Hello Volunteers:

Please remember to check the PERC Reference Calendar at least weekly and notify me of any changes that need to be made. It is hard to believe, but we are already in the second week of August. So, if you know your schedule as far ahead as November or December, please let me know. I will then update the calendar and a sub can be located.

Thanks again for all your help!

Great new tutorial on medical terminology

Dear volunteers,
I recently learned about a great new tutorial for medical terminology:
Understanding Medical Words by the National Library of Medicine.
Check it out. I think you will enjoy it.

Arriving on time to your shift

Dear volunteers,

Please note that the PERC is now required to submit -- in advance -- any closings during business hours to the Patient Education Program Manager. We ask that you do your utmost to arrive on time. Recently, we have received a few phone calls about the PERC being closed at 9:00 am. If there is an emergency that prevents you from arriving promptly at the beginning of your shift, please do the following as soon as you able:

Page Lori at 936-6266 Page ID #30855. Wait for Lori to call you back to confirm that she has received your message and will cover for you until you arrive. If you have not heard from Lori within 5 minutes, then page Ruti at 936-6266 Page ID #8583. Wait for Ruti to return your call and confirm that she will cover for you until you get there.

Other phone numbers to try are:
Lori's and Ruti's office: 936-9947, Lori's cell phone 734-904-2120 or Ruti's Cell phone 734-476-4800.

If you are late to an afternoon shift, we ask that you follow the same procedure. Please DO NOT contact an iPod Squad volunteer directly.

Thank you,

Ruti and Lori

Dress Code Policy

Dear Volunteers,
Please review the updated dress code for the cancer center. Our reference volunteers do not wear the uniform, therefore, they are expected to follow the dress code policy.

Thank you,
