Volunteer Uniforms

Dear Volunteers,

Recently Cancer Center leadership decided that all Cancer Center volunteers will wear uniforms regardless of placement. Mary McCully, our volunteer coordinator is moving forward with making sure all Cancer Center volunteers are supplied with one of the UMHS royal blue uniforms, either a jacket or smock, whichever they choose. Mary will start to distribute the uniforms next week. We appreciate your cooperation with this decision.

Massage Therapy - Additional Information

Hello Volunteers,

Recently I told you about the interruption of Massage Services offered at the Cancer Center. I have been advised that patients looking for Massage Therapy may be referred to the Wellness Community of Southeast Michigan.

They may contact The Wellness Community by telephone at 734-975-2500 or they may visit the website at http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/semich.main

New! Cancer Patient Toolkits

Hello Volunteers:

I wanted to let you know about a new product being distributed to our patients beginning February 1, 2010 -- The Patient Toolkit. This tool kit is a file box intended to hold various education, billing and appointment materials given to our patients throughout their treatment. The kit includes the Patient and Family Support Services booklet so from now on we will have a more limited supply of these booklets available.

The Patient Toolkits will be distributed to adult cancer patients upon their first visit to the center by Cancer Center Patient Guides beginning February 1st. In addition, extra copies will be available at the PERC as well as the Patient and Family Lounge located on Level 1 of the Cancer Center.

I am in the process of identifying a convenient location to keep the PERC supply of these toolkits; please let me know if you have any suggestions. In addition, I have placed one toolkit in the PERC for you to peruse.

I think this is an excellent new product for our patients and am very excited for distribution to begin. Please let me know if you have any questions.

PERC Public Computers

Hello Volunteers:

Recently, a number of employees have come to the PERC to use the Public Computers. Since these computers are for patients and their caregivers only, please ask staff members to refrain from using the PERC computers. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please let me know. Thanks for your help!

Massage Therapy - Interruption of Services

Hello Volunteers:

I have just learned that Massage Therapy services offered in the Cancer Center infusion areas have been temporarily discontinued, effective December 31, 2009. The services are expected to begin again in late January. I will notify you when the services resume.

Review of iPod Procedures

This entry should be read by both PERC Staff and iPod Volunteers.

Several of you have asked me some questions regarding the Sight and Sound Program Procedures. I thought I would review these on the Blog.

1. When patrons are completing the Out-Patient form, they should be placing the name of the Patient together with the Patient's Blue Card No. OR the Patient's Date of Birth on the form. Please note on the form the name of the person whose driver's license is being held, if it is not the patient's. Remember, it does not matter whose driver's license we hold, as long as it is a valid license (or state issued identification card), i.e. not expired.

2. After cleaning the iPods and placing them on the charger, please remember to verify that the iPod is on the correct charger. You should see a battery that is partially or totally black (if completely used) on the iPod screen. This may take a few minutes to appear, so please be patient. If the device is not on the correct charger, a triangle will appear on the device screen stating "device not compatible". The older iPods can be charged using either the white or black tips; newer iPods can only be charged using the black tips. The device is fully charged when the battery is completely green.

Pandemic Precations

Hello volunteers,
Please note that you may see a new purple sign on patients' doors for "pandemic precations". It indicates a confirmed case of H1N1 flu. Please treat this as a "contact precations" sign - i.e. avoid entering into the room.
