MiChart: Managing Your Health Online

Hello Volunteers:

I want to let you know about MiChart, an electronic health record system, purchased from Epic Systems Corporation, that will change how UMHC staff create and access clinical information to care for patients, conduct clinical research, and secure payment across UMHS.

An important phase of this multi-year implementation, MyUofMHealth.org, an online patient portal, will go-live on Wednesday, August 15.

Patients may visit the PERC and inquire about this new online resource which will allow them to take a more active role in their health care. By signing up for the MyUofMHealth.org, patients will be connected to a secure, online health connection enabling them to schedule appointments, request prescription renewals, review health history, view immunization records and even send secure messages to their health team.

A marketing program announcing this important new electronic health record system will be launched in September. In the meantime, patients who come to the PERC inquiring about the patient portal may be given the MyUofMHealth.org website to learn more and to sign up.

I encourage you to click on the MyUofMHealth.org link to learn more in anticipation of patient inquiries. From this MyUofMHealth.org link you will be able to access additional information including FAQs, the Privacy Policy and the Terms and Conditions related to the patient portal.

Because of the "go-live" launch, there may be some initial delays and confusion as staff become comfortable with Epic and MiChart. This may be a great time to offer an iPad for checkout to PERC visitors who may be experiencing longer than ususal wait times!

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding MiChart. This has been a very busy year for the PERC with the launch of the iPads and now with the UMHS launch of MiChart we have even more changes.

Thank you all for sticking with me and taking on ever more in your role as PERC staff volunteers.

iPads for Checkout!

This entry should be read by both Staff and Tech Squad Volunteers.

Hello Volunteers:

We officially began loaning iPads to our patrons in the out-patient areas on August 1, 2012! For those of you who have never used an iPad, I encourage you to play with it during your volunteer shift, as time allows.

The procedures for loaning the iPads are very similar to how we loan laptops. A PowerPoint presentation has been created that explains in more detail what is involved in loaning out these new devices.

I have left several copies of the document on the staff desk for your use. Please do not hesitate to make comments or suggest changes where I may not have clearly explained procedures. Once everyone has had a chance to work with the iPads, use the instruction guide, and give me your comments, I will update the PERC Intranet with the iPad information.

Please know how very appreciative I am of your patience and commitment as we contine to increase our collection for patients and their families. Your are a very special group of volunteers; your ability to accept and learn whatever new device is added to our Sight and Sound Program is incredible.

Thank you! --Lori

EOS Catalog Search Procedure

Hello Volunteers:

Many of you have contacted me in the past regarding issues you have experienced when searching the EOS catalog for patrons, including search results which list records that have been removed.

Alexandra looked into this issue and has identified a way to eliminate removed records from appearing in search results.

When you are searching on behalf of a patron, search via the public OPAC site which is available at http://ummceosspr1.cvc.med.umich.edu/EOSWeb/OPAC/search/AdvancedSearch.asp , rather than the open EOS window that you use for materials checkout.

This will eliminate a lot of erroneous search results, especially as more progess is made in the catalog cleanup.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please let me know. As always, thank you for all your help.

Voices Art Gallery Exhibit

Hello Volunteers:

I thought you might be interested in learning about the current exhibit on display in the Cancer Center’s Voices Art Gallery; it features art work by patients and is entitled “I have (or had) cancer and I feel … .”

The exhibit, which will be on display through December, features the art of cancer patients, many who have visited the PERC. The exhibit provides a glimpse into the many physical, emotional and/or spiritual feelings that occur in someone who has or had cancer. In addition, it offers understanding, awareness, insights and hope resulting in a lasting picture for both the artist and the viewer.

You may wish to take a few minutes before or after your shift to view the incredible pieces of art on display and to see if you have met any of the artists!

Miscellaneous Information

Hello Volunteers,

Just a brief update regarding some of the "quick reference" information, including the PERC paper calendar sheets that were located in the magnetic files near the staff desk. I have reorganized the information and placed it in a binder (orange) to be kept in the remaining magnetic file. (No, we are not going back to paper updates -- just trying to be more organized!)

Please continue making changes to your schedule on the paper calendar and letting me know, via email, when you will be unable to make your scheduled shift. You should continue to refer to the PERC Intranet for all policy and procedure questions related to your duties as a PERC volunteer!

And, as always, please never hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Many thanks for all your wonderful help in the PERC!

Cleaning for a Reason Inquiries

Hello PERC Staff Volunteers,

Several patrons have stopped in the PERC recently inquiring about a service for cancer patients called Cleaning for a Reason. If you receive inquiries about this service, please let the patron know that the University does not endorse any program specifically.

That said, I did inquire about the service with a representative from the Cancer Support Community (formerly the Wellness Community). I learned from my inquiry that the Cancer Support Community is not aware of any complaints or problems with the Cleaning for a Reason program. I have included a link to the Cleaning for a Reason website.

The website lists all the states that have home cleaning services participating; it also lists the names of the companies. You can ask the patron if they would like the link and suggest that they contact the Better Busines Bureau to see if any of the companies listed on the Cleaning for a Reason website have been flagged for problems.

If you have any questions regarding what to tell patrons, please don't hesitate to ask. Many thanks for all your help.

Cancer Support Community - Yoga

Hello Volunteers:

I just wanted to remind you that any patients inquiring about Yoga classes in the local area can be directed to the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor, since they offer Yoga classes and we partner with them in various initiatives.

Patients can refer to the bi-monthly newsletter and calendar located on the racks outside the PERC for additional information on times and registration. Information can also be accessed on line at the following site: http://cancersupportannarbor.org/

Please do not hesitate to refer patients to the Cancer Support Community when they inquire about needs that we currently do not provide, such as Yoga. You may also wish to peruse their site when you have some down time in the PERC!

And, as always, don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or suggestions. I am always glad to hear from you! Thanks for your help!

Flu Season is Here -- Masks Required!

This entry should be read by both PERC Staff and Tech Squad Volunteers.

Hello Volunteers:

Beginning at 7:00 a.m., Friday morning, January 21, members of the UMHS community (staff, students, volunteers) who have not been vaccinated against the flu are required to wear a protective mask during all face-to-face patient interactions or when entering a patient’s room.

This requirement applies to all members of the UMHS community (including volunteers!) who interact face-to-face with patients in any way. Face-to-face interaction includes entering a patient room for any job-related reason as well as checking patients in and out of U-M clinical facilities, and other types of patient-related activities.

The “masks on” requirement will remain in effect until the end of flu season. You will receive another message notifying you when masks are no longer required.

There are still opportunities to be vaccinated for free by visiting Occupational Health Services, located on the 3rd floor of the Med Inn Building. Occupational Health Services is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. If you have been vaccinated outside UMHS, be sure to provide proof of vaccination by faxing your information to OHS at (734)763-7405.

Those who have not been vaccinated and do not wear a mask when interacting with patients are considered to be out of compliance with this important safety policy. This requirement demonstrates to patients and visitors our strong commitment to protecting them from a virus that can cause serious illness in the most vulnerable.

If you have been vacinated but did not get a sticker for your ID badge, please let me know; I will get one for you.

If you would like additional information about the Flu Season Policy, please click on the following link: http://www.med.umich.edu/u/flu/

Thanks for your compliance with this important safety requirement.

Recycle Initiative: "Recycle Write"

This entry should be read by both PERC Staff and Tech Squad Volunteers.

Hello and Happy New Year!

I want to share with you some information about a recycle program being initiated this year in which you may wish to participate. The program, Recycle Write!, allows U-M staff, students, faculty and volunteers to dispose of pens, pencils and markers in an evironmentally-responsible way. Each year, millions of writing instruments are needlessly discarded and end up in landfills. To right this wrong, U-M has partnered with eco-friendly innovator TerraCycle to bring the Recycle Write! program to our campus.

In addition to recycling old writing utensils into new products, TerraCycle will also donate $0.02 to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital for each item recycled through the Recycle Write! program!

Please click on the following link to see what items are acceptable and to learn more about the program.

If you are interested in participating, just bring any items you may have at home to the PERC; I will see that they are sent to the appropriate recycle location. I have placed a Recycle Write sign on a U-M plastic bag for recycle items.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Holiday Changes

Hello Volunteers:

Just a reminder that the PERC will be closed this Friday, December 24, and next Friday, December 31. In addition, the PERC will close at 1:00pm Monday - Thursday, December 27-30.

Because of the 1:00pm closing next week, we have made arrangements for patients who wish to checkout either an iPod or a Laptop to be able do so and keep the device past our 1:00pm early closing.

Please complete the appropriate form for the iPod/Laptop and collect a valid driver’s license. Let the patient know that we will be closing at 1:00 and that you will need to know where they will be (Main Infusion Area, Infusion Area 2, or the Med Inn only) in order to return their license. If they are carrying a cell phone, it would be helpful to have that phone number to contact them.

Prior to completing the normal PERC closing procedures, you should take the Driver’s License to the infusion area the patient designated and give to the attendant at the nurses’ station. The staff member should be aware that patients may be returning devices to her; however, if the attendant has questions you cannot answer, please ask her to speak with her supervisor.

Once you have delivered the license(s) to the appropriate infusion area, please page Kathy Bishop (936-6266, Page ID# 30180) or her assistant, Melissa Dymond (936-6266, Page ID# 32605) and let her know the location(s) where the device(s) will be returned. Please Note: You will not need to deliver the license(s) to the Med Inn. Call Kathy or Melissa and they will come to the PERC and retrieve.

Any devices retrieved by Kathy or Melissa will be delivered to the PERC the following morning at which time you will need to clean and charge. If you have any questions, please let me know. We are not expecting to have many checkouts, but we want to be prepared!

Thanks again for volunteering during this holiday week. Your dedication to patients and families is greatly appreciated!

Goodbye to all

Dear volunteers,
I may not be able to say goodbye to you in person so I am writing to thank you all for your time, commitment and a job well-done at the PERC over the past few years. Both the PERC and I owe our success to you - PERC volunteers! You enabled me to implement many innovative programs and services that serve as models to other institutions.
My job will be posted soon and hopefully a new librarian will be hired in the next few weeks. This will be a similar position managing both the PERC and the Mardigian Wellness Resource Center at the CVC.
It has been a pleasure to meet you and work with you. I am not leaving the health system, so I will still see you around.
Wishing all of you best with a heartfelt thank you,

New Position for Ruti!

This entry should be read by both PERC Staff and iPod Squad Volunteers.

Hello Volunteers,

It is with mixed emotions that I write to let you know that Ruti Volk has accepted the newly created position of Patient Education Librarian with the UMHS. Congratulations to Ruti as she tackles this new endeavor! She will certainly be missed as she leaves her role as the PERC Libarian in the Cancer Center.

For many years Ruti has been an active member of the Patient Education Oversight and Steering committees at UMHS. In recent months, she has been responsible for building a Patient Education Clearinghouse, which brings together materials from across the health system into a central database. She has also implemented a health cataloging system that brings resources from the seven centers together.

This, of course, is in addition to the wonderful work she continues to do at both the Cancer Center's PERC and the CVC's Mardigian Wellness Resource Center. The UMHS Librarian position was created in order to allow these system-wide patient education improvements to continue. While we are sad to see her leave us, we are very happy to know that whomever fills her shoes will be able to continue to benefit from Ruti's leadership and guidance.

When you see Ruti, please congratulate her on her new role, which officially begins on December 1, 2010.

While I am Out

Hello Volunteers:

I wanted to touch base with you since I will be out beginning Friday, August 27, returning, sometime the week of September 6th(hopefully). Hoping to make things easier while I am gone, I have stocked some of the more frequently used brochures in the display cabinet outside the PERC. These include:

Chemotherapy and You
Radiation Therapy and You
Eating Hints, Before, During and After Treatment

In addition, extra brochures can be found on the wooden bookcases including:

WYNTK Non-Hodgkin's Disease
WYNTK Prostate Cancer
WYNTK Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer Dictionary

I have tried to stock the most used brochures; however, if you are out of a brochure and you cannot locate it on the Web to print for the patron, please send Melissa Dymond an email at barber@med.umich.edu specifying the brochure(s) that you need.

If you run out of Tool Kits, please email Sandy Hackett at shfisher@med.umich.edu to request more. Remember, Tool Kits are kept in the bottom right hand drawer of the public computer desk, the bottom middle book shelf, and on the 2nd shelf of the wooden bookcase (near the window).

Any searches or information requests that occur should be processed as usual. Please send an email to Ruti when the search is ready for her review. The search should then be placed in the top right hand drawer of the public computer desk.

Remember that any forms you may run out of (excluding the iPod sheets), can be printed directly from the PERC Intranet. The iPod forms are located behind the books on the middle bookcase (not sure which shelf!).

Regarding the iPods, we will continue to service In-Patients (8A/8B) who call the PERC to request the service. The majority of our student volunteers will complete their summer volunteer session this week or early next week. If a request does come in for an In-Patient iPod, please remember to ask if the patient is in Contact Precautions. If the patient is not in contact precautions, please get the patient's name and room number and email the information to Ruti at rvolk@umich.edu.

Thanks again for all your help in picking up extra shifts while I am out. See you soon! -Lori

Road Construction - Latest Update

This entry should be read by both PERC staff and iPod Squad Volunteers.

Hello Volunteers:

I just received the following updates regarding this summer's road construction.

Earhart / Geddes / US-23

By mid-August, eastbound Geddes Road traffic will be able to enter onto Northbound US-23 via a new roundabout and a Northbound entrance ramp.

The City has opened to traffic a temporary Geddes Road between the Southbound US-23 ramps and Earhart Road. Two-way traffic will operate on the temporary road until project completion in September.

Westbound Geddes Road over the US-23 bridge will remain closed until the rest of the Earhart/Geddes/US-23 project is complete.

The entire project is slated for completion by early November.

Further changes will be shared as they are received from the City of Ann Arbor.

More information about this and other parking, transportation and construction issues can be found at: http://www.med.umich.edu/i/parking/

Thank you all for the extra efforts you put forth to meet your volunteer commitment during this very heavy construction period.

CancerCare Publications

Hello Volunteers:

Perhaps you may have noticed that the variety of CancerCare brochures displayed in the PERC has decreased recently. Although many of the brochures are not available for ordering, we can still print PDF copies for patrons who would benefit from these booklets.

Listed below are some of the more popular brochures that can be printed as needed:

Coping with Nausea and Vomiting from Chemotherpy
Managing Diarrhea
Mouth Pain and Discomfort
Advances in the Treatment of Dry Mouth

Booklets that we currently have in stock for patients include:

Understanding and Managing Chemotherapy Side Effects
Managing Rash and Other Skin Reactions to Targeted Treatments
Caregiving for Your Loved Ones with Cancer
Coping with Cancer: Tools to Help You Live
Helping Children When a Family Member has Cancer

In addition to the booklets mentioned here, there are a number of other booklets which may prove helpful to our patients. Please don't forget to visit the CancerCare site when patients request information.

The CancerCare site is listed on the PERC Intranet under Favorite Links and Bookmarks or you can use the following link: http://www.cancercare.org

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you again for your excellent service to our patients.

A patient referral form for the American Cancer Society

Dear volunters,
In the past we advised patients to contact their local American Cancer Society if they were looking for support groups or local services. We have worked with our local ACS chapter to expand this service. From now on, instead of providing the patient with the number to call we will fax a Patient Referral From to the ACS. In response the ACS resource center will contact the patient with information and resources.

The ACS representatives explained that the ACS can help cancer patients and families with many practical needs, even with mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, getting childcare etc. Please do not hesitate to refer patients to them with these concerns.

A new page on our Intranet explains the procedure in detail.

I has been added to the Procedures section.

Be A Survivor DVD

This message is mainly for Monday volunteers:

The breast cancer class that meets on Monday mornings uses a DVD called "Be A Survivor". We own one copy of this DVD and may add more. Occasionally, patients ask if they can check out this DVD; as a result, the class facilitator will start referring them to PERC. If the DVD is out, please refer patients to the website:

This site has the same content as the DVD. Since Lange Productions will no longer be updating the DVD, this website will contain the most updated content and videos.

Volunteer Uniforms

Dear Volunteers,

Recently Cancer Center leadership decided that all Cancer Center volunteers will wear uniforms regardless of placement. Mary will start to distribute the uniforms next week. We appreciate your cooperation with this decision.

New! Cancer Patient Toolkits

Hello Volunteers:

I wanted to let you know about a new product being distributed to our patients beginning February 1, 2010 -- The Patient Toolkit. This tool kit is a file box intended to hold various education, billing and appointment materials given to our patients throughout their treatment. The kit includes the Patient and Family Support Services booklet so from now on we will have a more limited supply of these booklets available.

The Patient Toolkits will be distributed to adult cancer patients upon their first visit to the center by Cancer Center Patient Guides beginning February 1st. In addition, extra copies will be available at the PERC as well as the Patient and Family Lounge located on Level 1 of the Cancer Center.

I am in the process of identifying a convenient location to keep the PERC supply of these toolkits; please let me know if you have any suggestions. In addition, I have placed one toolkit in the PERC for you to peruse.

I think this is an excellent new product for our patients and am very excited for distribution to begin. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Flu shots

Influenza Program (UMHS)

UMHS volunteers and employees are encouraged to get the flu vaccine early for protection for the entire season. We should not endanger our vulnerable patients by exposing them to flu virus while they receive care from us. There is no charge for flu shots for UMHS employees and volunteers. Below is the current schedule for October.

Flu clinics held at UMHS:
October 23 11:00 am - 5:00 pm Dining Rooms A & B
October 28 10:00 am - 4:00 pm CVC, room 4317
October 29 9:30 am - 1:00 pm Cancer Center, room B1286

More flu clinics and information about the flu will be added as the season progresses, so please check the Influenza Program website for updates.

H1N1 Flu Shots:
When the H1N1 flu shot becomes available, OHS will offer vaccination for this as well. More information about H1N1 vaccine, supply and opportunities for vaccination should be known in early October, so please check back to see what additional information has been posted on the Influenza Program website.

Breast Cancer Annex - Level 1

Hello Volunteers:

The Breast Care Clinic located on level 1 of the building now has its own resource area for brochures and and handouts about breast cancer. This area is located to the right (as you step off) of the elevators on Level 1. The "Breast Cancer Resource Annex" is actually part of the PERC, but has space to display a lot more brochures and handounts about breast cancer than we are able to keep at the PERC.

The Breast Cancer Annex enabled us to reduce the number of breast cancer publications we display at the PERC. We still have a few basic ones, but it is a good idea to refer patients upstairs if they are looking for breast cancer information. ("if you would like more breast cancer brochures and handouts please visit our Annex on level 1") The shelve space we gained enabled us to shift the brochures around and display them better.

The Breast Cancer Annex is not staffed and patrons still need to come to the PERC if they want to check out books, iPods, DVD's and music CD's, request an expert search or pick up information guides. We have signs in the Annex referring patrons to the PERC to take advantage of our other services.

If you get a chance, we encourage you take a few minutes to visit this area so you are better able to assist our patients and visitors.

Please let me know if you have any questions and, again, thank you for all your help.

-Lori & Ruti

Hello Volunteers:

Please remember to check the PERC Reference Calendar at least weekly and notify me of any changes that need to be made. It is hard to believe, but we are already in the second week of August. So, if you know your schedule as far ahead as November or December, please let me know. I will then update the calendar and a sub can be located.

Thanks again for all your help!

While I am Away . . .

This entry should be read by both PERC Staff Volunteers and iPod Squad Volunteers.

Hello Volunteers:

As most of you know, I will be on vacation Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31. If anything urgent happens during your shift or if you are unable to make your shift, please PAGE Ruti (936-6266, Page ID #8583); for non-urgent matters, please send me an email or leave me a note and I will respond upon my return.

Please notify Ruti if you encounter any problems retrieving iPods. This includes the inability of an iPod volunteer to visit the In-Patient floor to retrieve/exchange iPods from current borrowers.

Also, if for some reason you are unable to open at 9:00 and you cannot reach Ruti via the Paging System, please page Melissa Dymond (Patient Education Administrative Assistant) by dialing 936-6266, ID#32605. Likewise, if you are running late for your 1:00 shift, please notify the volunteer you are relieving regarding your status. (Procedures for closing the PERC during regular hours are documented on the PERC Intranet.)

iPod Volunteers, if you arrive prior to the PERC being open, please request the key to open the PERC from the clerk(s) at Reception B. In addition, if you are running late or unable to make your shift, please contact the PERC staff (by calling 647-8626) to alert them to your status.

Thank you all for your hard work -- I will see you the week of August 3!

Fax Machine - Out of Order

Hello Volunteers:

Please be advised that the PERC fax machine is currently unable to RECEIVE faxes or make copies. Faxes can still be sent from this machine.

Until the PERC machine is either repaired or replaced, faxes for the PERC are being forwarded to the fax machine located in the Patient Billing area (located behind Reception Area B).

While I am away next week, please stop at this machine and check for PERC faxes. If each volunteer checks for faxes at the start of their shift, we should not have any delays in processing fax requests.

Thanks for your help!

Lindsey Jennings in the News!

Hello Volunteers.

I have attached a link to an article that was recently in The Ann Arbor News. The article tells of Lindsey Jennings' (recent U-M graduate and iPod/PERC volunteer) bout with E. coli and her efforts in lobbying for a food-safety bill as a result of her illness.

Way to go Lindsey!

This Entry is for all Volunteers - PERC Staff and iPod Squad
Hello Volunteers:

This is National Volunteer Week and both Ruti and I would like to thank you all for your volunteer efforts this past year. Whether offering to assist patrons in locating brochures and books, initiating searches, offering iPods or just a kind word, you have enabled us to make the cancer experience a little less stressful for patients and their loved ones. And, for this we are extremely grateful.

We may not say it often enough, but you are appreciated. Thank you all -- we couldn't be as successful without you.

Ruti and Lori

Volunteers Contact Information

Dear volunteers,
We recently updated the Intranet to include the volunteer contact information database. It is accessible through the "Resources & Contact lists" section of the Intranet.

When you click on the page "Volunteers Contact Info" you will get a search form where you can enter a term and do a search. You can search by first and last names, as well by by shift (day of the week) and type of volunteer (to restrict your search to a reference or an iPod Squad volunteer). Since this is on the Intranet now, you can access it from home and we hope that it will make it easier to find replacements.

I hope you like this new feature,

PERC Staff Reference Calendar Now on Intranet

Hello Volunteers:

I am excited to tell you that the PERC reference calendar has been added to the Intranet site. To view the calendar simply click on the Reference Desk Calendar link.

Please note that you have view only access. Therefore, when you need to make a change to the calendar, please let me know via email. I will update the calendar based on your communication to me.

It would be a good habit to check this calendar each shift, just as you do with PERC Blog. In addition, this calendar can be viewed from your home the same way you view the PERC Blog from your home.

Since this calendar is now being kept on the Intranet, it is more important than ever to keep me apprised of any changes to your regular schedule. I will update this calendar each time I am made aware of a schedule change. Please continue to work with each other in finding a substitute.

If you have any questions or problems regarding this latest Intranet addition, please don't hesitate to let me know. As always, thanks for your great help!

Hello Volunteers.

You will notice that the key lanyard you use during your shift now has four keys instead of three. There is now a separate key for the iPod drawer and the lateral file.

In addition, the Key/Stamp box has been replaced and reorganized. I have added 6 small containers and each is labeled with the contents. There are separate clear boxes -- one for the iPod Volunteers and one for the PERC volunteers.

All the containers are labeled as well as each individual key. If you have any questions or concerns about the keys, please let me know.

e-Books in the catalog

Dear volunteers,
Our new catalog has enabled us to catalog e-books. If you select e-book as a media when you do a search, you will find a record with a URL that connects to the e-book. So far I only cataloged a few encyclopedias, so if you search for an * and the media e-book it will bring you the list of all e-books currently in our catalog.

I hope to add more e-books in the future.

EOS update

Dear Volunteers,
Thanks to your hard work we now have all out materials in the new system - accept for the newsletter articles. These records are residing in the temporary Bibliographic Review file. We need to make some changes to the records before they can be moved over to the permanenet Bibliographic File.
(Materials in the Bibliographic Review do not show up when searching the OPAC - the public catalog).

Please start using the catalog when you search. It has links to a range of online hard-to-find materials. We will be adding more materials after we finish migrating the old Spectrum catalog into the new EOS system.

Your new UMHS uniquename

Hello Volunteers -

Recently I forwarded to you two emails: one with your new UMHS uniquename, and the other with the passwords that were assigned to you. When you are at the PERC, please follow the instructions to change the assigned password to your personal and confidential password.

Please make sure never to give your password to ANYONE. The University of Michigan Health Systems will take disciplinary action, including dismissal, against anyone who permits:

-The improper use of his/her sign-on.
-The inappropriate dissemination of confidential information.

How to change your password: Click On the 'set of keys' icon to the right of the Start button which is located on your workstation's tool bar.

Your new access will enable you to search the PERC Communication Blog from anywhere in the world! Right now the blog is available on the open Internet at http://mblog.lib.umich.edu/PERC/; however, if you try to search it, it asks for a user name and password. Please bookmark the blog on your computer so you can keep up with changes at the PERC when you are away for any length of time, ie. vacation, illness, etc.

The new access will also enable you to access the new PERC Intranet site. We are in the process of uploading the Resource Book contents on to a website. This should make working at the PERC much easier. Details will follow.

New Library System at the PERC

Dear Volunteers,
I am very happy to announce that we were approved for purchase of a new integrated library system that will replace our current catalog (Spectrum). The new system is called EOS and the catalog will combine the holdings of the PERC and the Cardiovascular Center Wellness Resource Center.

Implementation will take place on Nov. 18th, but it will take time to import our current records into the new system. I will keep you posted on how we will transition into the new system.

As part of the project EOS is providing online classes on using the catalog. I would like to invite all of you for the Training on using the public side of the catalog (this is called the OPAC. I have reserved a classroom and the training will be hands-on. This is the best way to learn! Please make an effort to attend the training on Tuesday, December 16 from 10:45 till 1pm.

Welcome to the PERC Communication Blog

Hello Volunteers and Welcome to the new PERC Communication Blog!

Ruti and I will be using this tool to communicate with you in a more efficient and timely manner. It will eliminate printing and filing and will enable us to search easily for items we may wish to refer to at a later time; we will no longer need to thumb through pages of material to locate an item. We think you will like it!

I think this will really improve communications involving the PERC. Let me know how you like the blog or if you have any questions. And, as aways, thanks for your WONDERFUL help!

Guest Wireless Network

The Guest Wireless Network is now active throughout the Cancer Center and the cancer in-patient units (which include 8A/8B). As a result, patients and guests may be referred to the PERC if they need to speak to someone about the network.

Please note: we are not able to assist patrons in connecting their own laptop or iPod to the guest network. We can only refer them to the numbers located on the back page of the Wireless Internet brochure. These brochures are located in the PERC on the 4th shelf of the book case where the DVDs are stored. In addition, these brochures are currently stocked in the waiting rooms and infusion areas of the Cancer Center.

When you check out an iTouch through our Sight & Sound Program please make sure it is connected to the Internet. This should be done after the checkout process is completed before the patron leaves the PERC.

Here are the instructions:

1. Tap on the Safari icon to open it. (Safari is the iPod web browser, smiliar to Internet Explorer on the Windows computer.)

2. The iTouch will load the Visitor Access Computer Network Agreement page which requires a simple log in. If an error message is displayed - just tap on "Continue" to load the page.

3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. You will see two text boxes. Next to last name type in "guest" next to email address type in: "guest@umich.edu"

4. The Guest Wireless Internet Access page will now load. Scroll down and tap “Continue?.

5. If this does not work you may have to turn the iTouch completely off and and on again.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions!

Lori and Ruti
