Access to the Cochrane Library of EBM Databases

The Health Sciences Libraries (Taubman Medical, Dentistry, Public Health) have provided two methods of access to the Cochrane Library for a number of years. Due to budgetary constraints, the Wiley Interscience version will no longer be available after December 31, 2006.

The Cochrane Library will continue to be available via the EBM Reviews databases in UM-Medsearch (http://www.lib.umich.edu/medsearch).

The staff of the Health Sciences Libraries can provide personalized consultation on searching Cochrane as well as offer assistance at the Information Desk, by phone (734)763-5109, or via email to sph.reference@umich.edu.

We appreciate your understanding as we continually review and make difficult decisions about our electronic resources.

Update on the University Library's Newspaper Collection

The University Library is pleased to announce two enhancements to our newspaper collection – Library PressDisplay which provides online view-on-demand access and ND Press which is a library-mediated print-on-demand service. These options provide timely access to a great number of US and international newspapers online as is preferred by patrons. For some titles, Library PressDisplay also allows printing of individual articles as well as the ability to listen to newspapers in the original language.

Due to the results of an internal study indicating an ongoing decline in the use of print newspapers, the Graduate Library will be canceling subscriptions to those print newspapers that receive little or no use. Please see the Graduate Library's Newspapers web page for additional information about both of these developments.

Should you need current issues of newspapers for your research or for your classes, please contact Marija Freeland (mfreelan@umich.edu).

Collection of International AIDS Posters Available Online

The online collection of over 619 AIDS posters from 44 countries has been digitized from the History and Special Collections division of the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. The browseable and searchable collection is available at http://digital.library.ucla.edu/aidsposters/

"The collection provides a fascinating insight into the many approaches that have been used to try to modify risk behaviors," said Roger Detels, MD, MS, UCLA professor of epidemiology and infectious diseases. "The posters range from terrifying to amusing and reflect the many cultures from which they have been drawn, which include national cultures and risk group cultures. The collection should be of interest to anyone interested in the history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and attempts to control it."
