Time and Location:
5:30 - 7:30 pm, Assembly Hall, 4th floor, Rackham Building
Pre-registration is required - see below for details
How can I tell if I’m in danger?
How do I signal before an attack that I will not make a good victim?
What are my choices for protecting myself?
What if I freeze up or forget what to do?
I want to feel powerful and safe – what do I need to know?
This two hour session will include risk assessment, information about the most common perpetrators and victims, and an introduction to many simple and effective physical, verbal, and emotional skills for empowerment and self-defense. We will learn techniques appropriate to both stranger and acquaintance danger. All participants will have the opportunity to practice physical techniques and to practice setting physical and verbal boundaries. Each student will leave with a Personal Safety Assessment to help identify any particular risk areas, safety assets and choices for future growth. This class is open to all genders, abilities, and identities. You do not have to be physically fit or wear gym clothes (though you may if you prefer) and we will not be learning martial arts. Survivors of violence are welcome; you are invited to participate in whatever way works for you. Empower yourself!
