Call for Nominations: Weiser Emerging Democracy Fellowships for Incoming Graduate Students

The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies at the University of Michigan (WCED) offers funding for Weiser Emerging Democracy Fellowships for Incoming Graduate Students in 2010-2011. These fellowships will be awarded to incoming graduate students at the University of Michigan who expect to focus their graduate work around the theme of "emerging democracy past or present" in Europe, Russia, or Eurasia.

Fellowship awards up to $12,000 will be given.

Deadline for submission of nomination materials: February 1, 2010.

Enrollment Certification

The following is a new feature available to University of Michigan students. To access the information in Wolverine Access go to: Student Business>Academic Records>Enrollment Certification.

The National Student Clearinghouse Self-Service Site is designed to enable a student to view his/her enrollment history and to obtain an enrollment certificate at no cost. Students may mail the printed certificate to health insurers or any other organization needing proof of enrollment.

Susan Lipschutz, Margaret Ayers Host and Anna Olcott Smith Awards - Due Jan. 4, 2010

The Susan Lipschutz Fund for Women Graduate Students was established to honor the memory of Dr. Susan Lipschutz, former Senior Associate Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. Many people in the University community esteemed Susan Lipschutz as a valued colleague, mentor and friend, and as an advocate committed to the support of women students as they pursued their doctoral degrees. The Susan Lipschutz Fund recognizes and supports promising women scholars.
Margaret Ayers Host received a Rackham degree in 1942. She studied at Oxford, was President of the Alumni Association, Chair of the Alumnae Council, member of the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics, and a member of the Rackham Board of Governors. The Margaret Ayers Host Award was established to honor her remarkable contributions as a woman scholar and to the University of Michigan community. Ella Smith Avery made a gift in 1938 in order to honor the memory of her mother and to support women graduate students at the University of Michigan. According to the terms of the gift, the Anna Olcott Smith Fellowship Endowment is intended to aid women graduate students who show “promise of the development of useful original ideas.”

Mary Malcomson Raphael Fellowship - Due Jan, 15, 2010

The Center for the Education of Women has announced the competition for the 2010-2011 Mary Malcomsom Raphael Fellowship for graduate women
students in a humanities or social science field of LSA. Candidates must be nominated by their department by February 26, 2010.

The department deadline is Friday, January 15, 2010.

This fellowship was established in 1985 for women graduate students in a humanities or social science field in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. It is intended as an award of high distinction and is presented to women held in the highest esteem by their faculty. Fellowship recipients are selected on the basis of their academic excellence and their potential to make a contribution of exceptional usefulness to society. The Fellowship is provided through an endowment established by the late Margaret Earhart Smith in recognition of her friend Mary Malcomson Raphael, a singularly resourceful and creative woman, who "had a gift for evoking power in people above and beyond their ordinary capacity."

This is an event for World AIDS Week, sponsored by the Multicultural and Gender Affairs Committee, to promote student and community collaboration, education, and activism. Various student, university, and community organizations join to offer information, opportunities to act (petitions, letters to senators, volunteer ops), and supply goodies (pins, pens, etc.). From 12:30 - 1:00 the event will have an interactive presentation from SEXPERTEAM regarding healthy relationships, communication, and safer sex considerations for GLBTQ communities. This is a great way for SW students to get involved and learn more about organizations available to them!

The Office of Student Services will be hiring incoming Fall 2010 MSW students as Graduate Student Staff Assistants. Two students will be hired to work in the Career Center and one student will be hired to work in the Office of Student Services on recruitment, admissions, and student services.

These positions will offer full tuition, a monthly living stipend, and University health insurance.
