4 Americorps VISTA Opportunities at Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative

The Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative of Washtenaw County is now accepting applications for 4 AmeriCorps VISTAs to begin in their year of service in July of 2010. For more information or to apply, send an e-mail to Mary King at washtenawmpri@gmail.com

VISTA Members receive:
• $936/mo. living stipend, health benefit, mileage reimbursement, training and support
• Student loan deferment
• Up to $5,350 for college, vocational school, graduate school, or to pay back student loans
• Non-competitive eligibility for federal government jobs
• The ability to attend school while serving as long as it does not interfere with VISTA assignments
• Experience working for an exciting new initiative designed to reduce crime by assisting those
returning from prison

Position Descriptions:

Two (2) Workforce Developers
• Recruit employers willing to hire returning prisoners
• Assist in employment program development, implementation, and evaluation
• Partner with the MPRI Employment Specialist agency and Michigan Works!
• Recruit community resources to assist returning prisoners who want to start a new businesses

Pro-Social Activity Coordinator
• Develop positive social activities for returning prisoners in Washtenaw County
• Work collaboratively with the MPRI mentoring programs
• Create community service opportunities for MPRI clients
• Network/write grants to solicit funding for social activities

Outreach Coordinator/Administrative Assistant
• Identify gaps in services and communication and develop resources and systems to address the needs
• Serve as the “front-line” of information for Washtenaw MPRI
• Track projects and assignments and represent the Community Coordinator in public forums
• Maintain a clean and welcoming office environment

The Successful Applicant will have:
• A Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
• Knowledge of the local community
• Reliable transportation
• Excellent organizational skills
• Public speaking experience
• Familiarity with the criminal justice system
• A positive attitude and desire to learn
• The ability to commit 40hrs/week to the Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative
