St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham, MI is seeking a Minister for Youth and Young Adults. If you are a lay person, the position is salaried based on 20 hours per week. If you are ordained, the position is salaried based on 40 hours a week with at least half of the time directed to youth ministry. St. James seeks a person who will manage, grow and update an established youth ministry program and to develop a young adult program.

We wish to encourage our young people to participate in all facets of the life of the community of faith and to transition to adulthood. The desired candidate will generate new ideas and projects to attract more youth and their families as well as young adults to our church. St James currently serves several dozen children, youth and young adults, ages 21 and under, and has a part time childrens minister. St. James also has a pre-established pre-school program serving 80 children. The Minister for Youth and Young Adults should have a high level of energy and an exciting, energetic and engaging personality with the ability to easily communicate with and serve as a role model. The ideal candidate will also work well in a multigenerational environment.
St. James seeks a person who has a solid understanding of the foundations of the Christian Faith and Episcopal traditions combined with a strong desire to nurture young people. The Youth and Young Adult Minister is a staff position accountable to the Vestry and shall report periodically directly to the Vestry. The Youth and Young Adult Minister shall be under the immediate supervision of the Rector.
1. Ministry to Youth and Young Adults
a. Develop, promote and coordinate a balanced program of activities and discipleship ministry to youth and young adults.
b. Train and involve youth or young adults and their leaders in an outreach program to reach youth and their families or young adults that are not currently participating in church programs.
c. Plan yearly youth emphasis to involve youth in areas of church leadership.
d. Involve youth and young adults in ministry and mission projects.
e. Be available for mentoring.
f. Support youth and young adults in their school setting.
2. Ministry to Parents: Be available to parents to discuss issues related to their child or youth ministry.
3. Ministry to Youth and Young Adult Leadership:
a. Enlist a balance of men and women volunteers to act as leaders.
b. Lead regular leadership meetings with leaders.
c. Provide training opportunities to improve skill set of leaders.
4. Other Responsibilities:
a. Will assist in and serve as resource person to childrens ministry, which includes a part time childrens minister.
b. Draw up a yearly budget for youth and young adult ministry and submit to finance committee.
c. If ordained, will be available to fill the pulpit, conduct funerals, assist in hospital visitations etc.
d. Perform other duties as assigned by the Rector.
Qualifications: A calling to ministry or equivalent passion for youth and young adults. B.A. degree preferred with at least 2-3 years of relevant experience. Coursework will be expected in fields such as religion, child psychology, family studies and communication.
