Genesee County Family Court: Court Improvement Program, Parent Representation Pilot Project
As part of the 2012 Michigan Court Improvement Program, the State Court Administrative Office Child Welfare Services Division (CWS) will fund a Parent Representation Project in Genesee County to improve parents’ legal representation and access to services in child abuse/neglect proceedings. A crucial component of the program is to provide a social worker to partner with the parent attorney. Together, the team can collectively advocate for the appropriate supports and services for parents involved in Genesee Family Court abuse and neglect cases.
Type of Employment
This position is for a 1099 contractor. No employment benefits are offered. There is a one-year commitment, however; it is anticipated the pilot will last a total of three years. Each year the contract may be extended, subject to annual grant renewals and the social worker’s satisfactory performance.

This is a full-time 1099 contract social worker position. The social worker will assist parents represented by Genesee County appointed attorneys. The primary purpose of the social worker is to provide clinical expertise to support the legal position being presented to the court. This may include attending case conference meetings, reviewing case service plans, advocating with the Department of Human Services’ case worker or assigned private agency worker, and ensuring the client is empowered to engage in reunification services. The social worker will at all times communicate with the lead attorney on each assigned case and act in accordance with the legal plan for the case. The social worker will be trained in the Social Worker practice standards and will collaborate extensively with the attorneys, court staff and the agency providing permanency services. The social worker will collect and report key data elements and report quarterly to the SCAO.
•Graduate degree in Social Work or other relevant area
•Must be willing to travel out of state for training in Spokane, Washington
•Demonstrated commitment to public interest issues
•Experience in working with at-risk families (internship or clinical experience sufficient)
•Experience with data collection and Microsoft Excel
•Ability to flourish in a high-energy environment
•Must be self motivated and timely
•Ability to multi-task and be a productive team player
•Ability to work compassionately and respectfully with clients in crisis
•Excellent verbal, interpersonal, writing, interviewing, and organizational skills
•Bilingual skills preferred
•Experience working with individuals from multi-ethnic communities
