Every year, more than a million visitors come to the islands of Hawai’i to vacation in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Few, however venture outside the places designated for tourism or have an opportunity to learn about the people and their history, especially that information which does not support the tourism industry. The purpose of this presentation is to share some of the lesser known truths of Hawai’i, its people, and its history, many of which were learned through Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduate (GIEU) service trip last summer. Topics of discussion include the impact of tourism and the U.S. military, Native Hawaiian sovereignty and nationhood, environmental issues, and health and social disparities among
Native Hawaiian people.

In 2008, three million people in the United States volunteered to serve others on this special day. This year, the CBI students will be visiting the older adult clients of LA SED (Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development) located in Southwest Detroit to serve them lunch, facilitate a creative arts activity, and listen to their oral histories. On Saturday, October 24th we will depart from the SSW at 10am and return by 3pm.
There are still a few slots for other SSW students to participate in this activity. Speaking Spanish is a plus, but not required. If you are interested, please contact Bill Vanderwill (wmvand@umich.edu) at and let him know if you will need van transportation from Ann Arbor or will meet the group in Detroit.

These courses have now been added to the Fall 2009 Class Schedule. There are no such offerings for the Spring/Summer term. This seminar is open to all students in advanced methods and practice areas and allows them to process field related experiences in a safe milieu. It is a one credit elective that must be taken concurrently with SW 691.
