Every year, more than a million visitors come to the islands of Hawai’i to vacation in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  Few, however venture outside the places designated for tourism or have an opportunity to learn about the people and their history, especially that information which does not support the tourism industry.  The purpose of this presentation is to share some of the lesser known truths of Hawai’i, its people, and its history, many of which were learned through Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduate (GIEU) service trip last summer.  Topics of discussion include the impact of tourism and the U.S. military, Native Hawaiian sovereignty and nationhood, environmental issues, and health and social disparities among
Native Hawaiian people.
