The Kay Reebel Scholarship Fund is made possible by a gift from Katherine R. Reebel, emeritus professor of the School of Social Work. The Award funds are used to provide tuition support for MSW students.

Winter 2010 Registration and Course Schedule

Registration for the Winter term 2010 will begin November 23. To prepare your class schedule in advance, backpacking will be available beginning November 16. The Winter term course schedule is now available via both Wolverine Access and the SSW web site. Additional information such as the dates and times of mini courses, or assignment of instructors will be posted as the information becomes available.

An integral part of the SSW commencement ceremony is the opportunity for one or two of our MSW degree candidates to speak. This opportunity is open to SSW students who expect to complete their MSW degree requirements at the end of December Term 2009, are in good academic standing, and plan to attend the ceremony on December 19th.

Entries must include items #1 & 2 below:

  1. Typed speech (4-5 minutes in length) which reflects the occasion and academic experiences unique to the SSW. Be sure to include your full name, email address & phone number on your speech.

  2. Resume

  3. Audiocassette tape, MP3, or CD of author reading the speech (optional).

DECEMBER 2009 MSW DEGREE CANDIDATES - Your input is needed!

Please read & respond by Monday, October 19th.

The Graduation Committee would like your input in suggesting faculty participants for the following roles in our SSW graduation ceremony on December 19th.

  • Marshals: (3) - coordinate the ceremony activities on the day of graduation
  • Readers: (2) - read individual names of graduates as they cross stage
  • Hooders (3) - place ceremonial Masters hood over graduates head before they cross stage

You do not need to specify specific roles - just names of the faculty you would like to see participate. The Graduation Committee will invite and assign the specific roles to those selected.

Funding for Student Organizations

Make a Difference Day Event

In 2008, three million people in the United States volunteered to serve others on this special day. This year, the CBI students will be visiting the older adult clients of LA SED (Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development) located in Southwest Detroit to serve them lunch, facilitate a creative arts activity, and listen to their oral histories. On Saturday, October 24th we will depart from the SSW at 10am and return by 3pm.

There are still a few slots for other SSW students to participate in this activity. Speaking Spanish is a plus, but not required. If you are interested, please contact Bill Vanderwill (wmvand@umich.edu) at and let him know if you will need van transportation from Ann Arbor or will meet the group in Detroit.

The University of Michigan’s Institute for Human Adjustment and the U-M Depression Center are partnering with Rackham Graduate School to offer free, confidential mental health screenings. If you had your Mcard photo updated and would like it to replace an existing photo in the roster, you will need to submit a new online consent form by Monday, September 28, 2009.

Only photographs with written consent will be used; therefore, if you do not want your photograph included, do not complete the online consent form.

Students who participated in the roster last year will be automatically included in the roster this year. If you would like to have your photo removed, please submit a written request to the Office of Student Services by September 28, 2009.

The Derrick L. Anderson Memorial MSW Scholarship:
MSW student who has demonstrated leadership, support or involvement in organizations, activities, issues, or scholarship that promote responsible and informed social work practice with tblg individuals and/or communities. To apply click here.

Global Child Human Rights: Policies and Practices

The mini course will focus on children’s human rights (including the right of protection from abuse and exploitation; right to grow up in a family environment; right to survival, education and health; and the right to participate), the various forms of violations against those rights and the implications for policy and practice. Sub-topics examined will include family preservation and reunification, adoption abuses, child trafficking, the most hazardous forms of child labor including as child soldiers and participants in the sex and drug trades, harmful cultural practices against children, and many others.

H1N1 Flu Virus: Important Message

The School of Social Work Office of Student Services has created an email address, ssw.flu@umich.edu, to which you should send notification that you will be absent from class because you have the flu. The use of this email address will eliminate the need for multiple email or phone contacts in order to notify instructors of absences due to illness. Your instructors will be notified by email that you have reported having the H1N1 flu. If you have questions about this e-mail process, please feel free to contact Nyshourn Price (ndp@umich.edu) or Lauren Davis (laurdavi@umich.edu) in the Office of Student Services (734/936-0961).

Student Initiative Grants from the Ginsberg Center

The Ginsberg Center invites proposals from MSA registered student organizations that are involved in service and social justice work. The proposals for the Fall 2009 grant cycle are due on Friday, September 25th, by 5pm.

The Fall 2009 grant cycle supports projects that occur between September 1st, 2009, and March 15th, 2010. Funding is provided by The Ginsberg Center with support from The Ron and Eileen Weiser Fund.

Financial Aid Disbursement

Financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans) for all students enrolled in the Fall 2009 term will be disbursed on August 29, 2009. Financial aid will first pay tuition, fees, and any other charges due to the University. Any money remaining after these amounts are paid will be refunded to the student. Students who have direct deposit set up will receive a deposit on September 3, 2009. If direct deposit is not set up, a refund check will be mailed on September 3, 2009 to the student's current address. All students should be sure to keep their current address updated in wolverine access: http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/

U.S. State Department offers Fulbright Information Sessions on the following dates:

- all sessions will be held from 12:00-1:00pm in room 2609 SSWB in the School of School of Social Work Building.

The purpose of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. The State Department makes Fulbright fellowships available to over 1,500 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English, or train in the creative arts in more than 140 countries worldwide. The competition is administered at the University of Michigan through the International Institute. At the information session, a University of Michigan Fulbright Program Advisor will describe the application and selection process and provide suggestions for making your application more competitive.

Women’s Studies is pleased to offer Feminism and Health with Professor Julia Seng during Fall 2009. This course will be an interdisciplinary experience and Women’s Studies students are very welcome. Closed Course Petitions

Welcome new students. Many of you will begin registering in just a few days. If you find it necessary to submit a closed course petition please know that decsisions on these petitions will be an ongoing process throughout the summer. You will be informed of the decisions via email from the SSW Registrar's office. Once you have registered and submitted a petition we recommend that you check your umich email several times a week. You may find out within a few days or it may be several weeks but you can expect a response prior to the start of the term (for those submitted in July and August).

UPDATED PARKING INFO: Parking will be open to the public at the Thayer Street parking structure near the Modern Language Building for parking at no charge for SSW Commencement attendance. Handicap parking is available in the parking structure. There is also some metered parking available on side streets near Hill Auditorium.

Students who complete an official name change with the University Registrar's office need to inform the SSW Regisrar's office they have done so. Please provide us with your former and new name. Email or verbally is acceptable as we will not be making any change to your record until we see it on the University system. Thank you.

A new section of SW 623, IP with Families, section 004, has been added to the Fall 2009 term course schedule. There are a few available spots for continuing students. The section is offered on Friday mornings 9am-12pm and is being taught by Katie Pelz-Davis. If the section is full before you can get in you may file a closed course petition.

Combined/Cross-listed courses with other U-M units

Some courses offered at the University of Michigan are combined with Social Work, which means Social Work has a course number associated with the class for which you can enroll. These courses have now been added to the Fall 2009 Class Schedule. There are no such offerings for the Spring/Summer term. However you can still take other graduate level courses outside of the School of Social Work even if they are not combined. Some that may be of interest to you can be found in the Outside Class Listings section.

Mini/Topic Courses

Mini courses are intensive courses designed to address advanced practice skills. These courses focus on best practices. The SW 790 course sections focus on clinical skills and the SW 799 sections focus on macro skills. The course sections are 1 credit hour for elective credit only. These are offered at various dates and times throughout the semesters and are noted in the Schedule of Classes on the SW web site and on Wolverine Access.

Advanced Field Seminar SW 631 offered Fall term 2009

This elective course is designed to provide opportunities for social work students in advanced field placements to engage in integrative learning, peer consultation and professional eportfolio development activities. This seminar is open to all students in advanced methods and practice areas and allows them to process field related experiences in a safe milieu. It is a one credit elective that must be taken concurrently with SW 691.

The Registration Information site for the upcoming Spring/Summer and Fall 2009 continuing student registration is now available on the SSW web site, here.

Backpack begins March 25 and registration begins April 1. Your registration appointment time is expected to be available for viewing on Wolverine Access on or after March 25. Please read the first document on the Registration Information page as listed above for further information about the appointment schedule.

Be sure to watch the MSW Student Blog daily from now through registration for any potential timely updates.

Remember registration is for both Spring/Summer and Fall terms.
