The School of Social Work offers several special programs that can enhance your learning and preparation for your social work career. You must apply for these programs by either December 1, 2009 (early application deadline) or February 1, 2010 (priority deadline).
Child Welfare Scholarship Program
The purpose of the Child Welfare Scholarship Program is to train committed specialists in child welfare.
• Nonresident: $40,000 total award
• Resident: $20,000 total award

The purpose of the Community-Based Initiative Program is to train committed specialists in community-based work through courses, projects, and field placements in southwest Detroit and east Dearborn.

The Geriatric Scholarship Program aims to address the need for geriatric social workers by creating more aging-rich placements and increasing the number of students in the field of health care and social work for older people.

The Jewish Communal Leadership Program presents a distinctive educational opportunity for individuals committed to helping Jewish communities meet 21st-century challenges while addressing broader social concerns.

The School of Social Work will host Social Work Day on Friday, November 13th. This is a great day for prospective students to visit the School and learn more about the MSW program and PhD in Social Work and Social Science. Click here for more information.
Prospective students are invited to learn more about the School of Social Work by joining an online session or attending an on-campus prospective student information session. Admissions counselors will discuss program options, degree requirements, the application process, financial aid, and more. Both options will allow prospective students to ask questions during the session.

Please note: September 2nd is an optional Community Service Day. September 4th is required only for students starting Advanced Field Instruction (SW 691) in Fall 2009 (i.e advanced standing, transfer, students exempted from foundation field). All students are expected to attend the orientation activities on September 3rd.

Financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans) for all students enrolled in the Fall 2009 term will be disbursed on August 29, 2009. Financial aid will first pay tuition, fees, and any other charges due to the University. Any money remaining after these amounts are paid will be refunded to the student. Students who have direct deposit set up will receive a deposit on September 3, 2009. If direct deposit is not set up, a refund check will be mailed on September 3, 2009 to the student's current address. All students should be sure to keep their current address updated in wolverine access: http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/

You will find a comprehensive step-by-step guide on securing a global social work opportunity on our website. Advanced Standing and 16-month students must be enrolled in field instruction during the Fall Term of their admit year to be eligible for an international field placement. 20-month students are not eligible field credit because they are not enrolled during Spring/Summer Term. 20-month students are eligible for Special Studies credit for any research based on international work.
The costs involved are different for each placement and dependent on your length of stay. The range can span from $4500 - $9800 for a 8-12 week stay. Please note that if you are a 16-month student or an Advanced Standing student, you will also be paying for Spring/Summer tuition on top of expenses for your global social work experience.

The purpose of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. The State Department makes Fulbright fellowships available to over 1,500 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English, or train in the creative arts in more than 140 countries worldwide. The competition is administered at the University of Michigan through the International Institute. At the information session, a University of Michigan Fulbright Program Advisor will describe the application and selection process and provide suggestions for making your application more competitive.

Women’s Studies is pleased to offer Feminism and Health with Professor Julia Seng during Fall 2009. This course will be an interdisciplinary experience and Women’s Studies students are very welcome. Welcome new students. Many of you will begin registering in just a few days. If you find it necessary to submit a closed course petition please know that decsisions on these petitions will be an ongoing process throughout the summer. You will be informed of the decisions via email from the SSW Registrar's office. Once you have registered and submitted a petition we recommend that you check your umich email several times a week. You may find out within a few days or it may be several weeks but you can expect a response prior to the start of the term (for those submitted in July and August).
All incoming students are required to complete an academic integrity tutorial and a library tutorial. The academic tutorial can be viewed Here. The library tutorial will be available in early August.
Please review your relevant Course Planning Worksheet after August 1, 2009 to ensure you have the latest updated information.

The Office of Student Services will be sending matriculated students instructions on how to schedule their registration appointment, web-based course advising session, web-based field instruction session, and new student summer session very soon. Web-based field sessions will take place June-July. Registration, course advising, and New Student Summer Sessions will take place July-August. An email with more details will come to students who have paid their enrollment deposits in the next few weeks.
Often at this time of year students are looking at avenues for financing their education and bridging the gap between their financial aid package and the cost of attending our MSW program. There is a relatively new option for MSW students: Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate Students (Grad PLUS).
