Purpose

The Executive Committee of the Wallenberg Endowment is sponsoring the Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowships. While a student at the University of Michigan in the 1930s, Raoul Wallenberg traveled across North America to observe and learn from people of all kinds on their own terms. This experience helped him understand the human condition, and shaped his life-long concern for human dignity and humanitarian values. His heroic efforts to rescue the surviving Jews of Budapest are an inspiring demonstration of how one individual can make a difference, even under the most dire circumstances.
In the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg's experience at Michigan, the Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship will allow selected students to take part in a community service project or civic participation anywhere in the world. The fellowship will support such experiences as, for instance, volunteer work with a humanitarian organization such as a school, clinic, or aid program, or the exploration of humanitarian issues not well understood in the United States. Projects should be at least four weeks in duration and take place outside of the U.S. between May and August 2010. The University’s international travel policies will be followed.
The University of Michigan’s Ginsberg Center will receive applications and organize the selection process.

Awards

Several fellowships will be made annually, each in the amount of up to $5,000 to cover transportation, room and board, and local excursions made in connection with the project. One fellowship will be the Isabel Bagramian Summer Travel Award, given by Linda Bennett and Robert Bagramian in honor of Isabel Bagramian.
At least one award will be made to an undergraduate student in any of the University’s schools or colleges, and at least one award will be to a student in any of the University’s graduate or graduate/professional programs.

Eligibility

Undergraduates must be in good standing at the University of Michigan, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants must have completed 72 credits by the time of travel, and be enrolled full time for at least one more semester at the University following return to the U.S.
Graduate and graduate/professional students must be in good standing academically, pursuing a degree full-time, and enrolled for at least one semester following return to the U.S.

Application

-An application form that includes personal and academic information.
-A statement of purpose, of no more than three 12-font double-spaced pages, that describes purpose and goals of the proposed project or experience and how it addresses the purpose of the Wallenberg International Travel Fellowship. The statement should include:
*the location and any supervision and/or agency involved in the experience;
*the feasibility of the proposal, including information about any preliminary contacts at the site(s) of the proposed project and arrangements for accommodation;
*how the applicant’s presence or activities will benefit or serve the local community;
*previous travel overseas, and experience in community service or civic participation;
*what the applicant expects to gain personally from the proposed experience and how this will contribute to future plans; and
*how the applicant intends to share this experience with others.
-A full budget and timetable that show anticipated costs and any other source of support, pending or confirmed. Equipment will not be funded.
-A recommendation from the applicant’s principal adviser or another faculty member who can assess the student’s readiness to undertake the proposed project.
-An unofficial copy of the University of Michigan academic transcript.
-Letter of affiliation from any supervising or sponsoring agency.
-A résumé/curriculum vitae.
-For undergraduates, a signed permission agreement to be read and completed by parent(s)/guardian(s).

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated according to the feasibility of the proposal; how the applicant’s presence or activities will benefit or serve the local community; the benefits for the student’s personal development; and how the proposed experience reflects the humanitarian values and commitment of Raoul Wallenberg. The review committee takes into consideration the practicability of the proposal, including costs; the availability of local arrangements necessary to support the student and make the project or experience possible; and whether the proposed time is sufficient for the proposed experience. Projects that involve longer stays, that a student arranges outside a class or standard professional placement, and that hold promise of more impact on the local community will tend to be evaluated more favorably. Proficiency in relevant language(s) is not a requirement but, depending on the nature of the proposal, may be considered by the selection committee. The fellowship is not intended to be research funding.

Project Evaluation

Recipients of the Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship are expected to reflect upon what they learned and share this with others. Upon return to the U.S., Wallenberg Travel Fellows will be asked to prepare a brief report and to meet with members of the Wallenberg Committee to discuss their experience. Fellows are also expected to take part in the annual Wallenberg Lecture and outreach activities in the year following their fellowship.

The Villers Fellowship

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by Philippe Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Villers Fellows work in our health policy department and assist our organization's efforts to improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable communities.

Specifically, Villers Fellows will conduct research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to publications that are relevant to current health policy debates.

In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network of young leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to health care justice work following their year as a fellow. Additionally, in order to encourage the development of future leaders, Villers Fellows must commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of their careers.

The application deadline for the Villers Fellowship is January 15, 2010.

If you have any questions about the Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice or would like to request hard copies of the application brochure, please contact me at villersfellowship@familiesusa.org

The Wellstone Fellowship

The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice aims to advance social justice through health care advocacy by focusing particularly on the unique challenges facing communities of color. Through this fellowship, established to honor the memory of the late Senator Paul D. Wellstone, we hope to expand the pool of talented social justice advocates from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate an interest in health care policy and racial/ethnic health disparities. Additionally, we are looking for an individual who displays the potential to contribute to social justice work after their year of hands-on experience as a fellow.

The application deadline for the Wellstone Fellowship is February 5, 2010.

If you have any questions about the Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice or would like to request hard copies of the application brochure, please contact me at wellstonefellowship@familiesusa.org.

Both fellowships are year-long, full-time, salaried positions at our office in Washington, DC. Each year, one candidate will be selected for each fellowship. Selected fellows will receive a compensatory package that includes an annual salary of $38,000 and excellent health care benefits.
