How to complete a transfer application to Taubman College

To apply to the undergraduate architecture program at Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning an applicant must complete an online application.

You will first need to log in or create a new account. You will then answer preliminary questions.

Question 1. What type of student are you applying as?
Select cross-campus transfer if you attend the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Select new transfer if you are applying
from another institution, including University of Michigan, Dearborn
and University of Michigan, Flint.

Question 2. What School or College are you applying for?
Select A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Please answer the remaining preliminary questions. Save and continue.

Page 4: Please complete all fields listed under “Plan of Study”. All native English speaking applicants can skip the fields under the “Testing” section on page 4. If English is not the applicants native language, please complete the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) section. Please also have your official TOEFL score sent to the University of Michigan, institution code 1839.

Page 5: New Transfers can complete the section, “Coursework”, and can elect to answer the question “Is there anything in your academic record that you should explain?” New transfers do not have to answer any other questions on this page, even though the fields indicate they are required.

Page 7: New transfers should complete all fields with the course numbers your university uses.

Page 7: Cross campus transfers should complete the short answer question 750-1000 words. Describe the path that led to your decision to study architecture at the University of Michigan. What specific experiences, events, writings, buildings, or people have been influential?

Page 8: New transfers must complete all three essay questions (page 8, 9, and 10).

Cross-campus transfers should print one Architecture Recommendation Form, complete the top portion, and have a non-architecture professor (non-architecture GSI)complete the recommendation form and attach a letter on letterhead and have it sent to:

Note to all U of M cross campus applicants

Cross-Campus applicants:

Although you are currently attending the University of Michigan in another school or college, please take this application to transfer into the architecture school very seriously. It is a competitive application process and not all students that apply to this program (either cross campus or new transfers) are admitted. The admissions committee will make a decision regarding your application based on the materials you submit. If you do not submit the requested materials it will have a negative impact on your admissions review. It is important the you adhere to deadlines outlined to make sure there is enough processing time available to complete your file and make it accessible to the committee members. It is the applicant's responsiblity to make sure that materials are turned in on time and to the correct offices. We cannot make exceptions for late applicants as it is unfair to the other applicants that submitted their materials on time. Put your best effort into this application and do not give the committee a reason (incomplete/late application) to give you a less than thorough review.

Pre-Architecture Portfolio Workshop

Are you applying to the undergraduate architecture program? Please join us for a free portfolio workshop on Thursday, January 10th where Two faculty members will discuss tips on portfolio design, organization, and presentation. In addition, two media center staff will present scanning and printing process techniques and advice. All current U-M students and new transfer students are welcome. No registration is necessary.

The importance of Pre-Requisite courses - Can I complete them over the summer?

Taubman College requires students to complete 6 required pre-requisite courses before beginning the Bachelor of Science program. The two years of architecture curriculum are very carefully sequenced and students will be utilizing material learned in the pre-requisite classes as part of their course material in the architecture program. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that students have completed the following pre-requisites before beginning the Architecture courses in the Fall: 1 English composition course, 1 calculus course, 2 physics courses with labs, 2 pre-architecture studio drawing courses.

We would strongly recommend that students complete the pre-requisite courses during their freshman and sophomore years. Many students elect or are forced to finish up any required pre-requisite courses over the spring and summer terms before starting the architecture program. This is often troublesome for the following reasons: 1)fewer courses are offered over spring/summer terms at most schools, 2)even if the courses are offered, often they are cancelled later due to low enrollment numbers, 3)spring/summer courses usually have reduced credit hours (1 or 2 vs. 3 or 4 for a regular term), and 4)the terms dates are different for every school and can sometimes overlap.

So be proactive and don't delay taking the required pre-requisites. If you must take courses over the summer, make sure you research various schools that you might be able to attend in case you do find yourself in a situation where a class closes. It will only help you to avoid a very stressful summer.
