first musings

So I've just set up my blog... again, I guess, since I had one for another class. Let me say again, I don't really enjoy blogs. I like to look at other people's...sometimes, but I really don't enjoy sitting at a computer long enough to make my own as interesting as it really deserves to be; you know, pictures, cute typeface...the whole nine yards. I will try.

For now, words. What do I want to do with this "IP experience?" Oh, I've thought about it enough that to write it again might make me explode, so maybe more on that in a bit. In a nutshell, I think I am interested in the evidence of life, to use "artspeak." I want to reuse materials, but not for the recycling factor, not for an irony factor, but to take materials that we use everyday, leave behind, things that show our presence, and use them as just materials again - maybe make us look at them more than we have previously, maybe remind us of something in our day, maybe puzzle to figure out why something looks familiar only to realize it is part of the tub of yougurt we finished the night before.

I like the idea of patchwork, of sitting on a quilt and being able to tell where every piece of fabric came from. I think it was in the book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" that the main character watched a woman work evenings on a rag rug she made out of her husband's old suits, and when it was done, it looked fit enough to hang on a wall, but instead she got up and threw it on the floor in place of the old kitchen rug. I think I want to revive things like this, not to hang on the wall, but.... I haven't gotten that far.

I want whimsy, not to be too serious. I want my things to fit into everyday life, to not even have to be "exhibited" per se. Rag rugs, earrings, necklaces, mittens, curtains, cookies, etc. etc.
