ALA @ SI : Mission statement

The goal of the student chapter is to enhance the students' experience at the School of Information by offering free membership and special programming on the UM campus.

Our chapter was founded on December 1, 1980, at SI's precursor, the School of Library and Information Science. Current members of the chapter are graduate students at SI from a variety of specializations.

Because the masters program at SI is accredited by the American Library Association, all graduates are qualified to apply for professional library positions. Students that arrive at SI with a different career in mind often find that libraries provide a unique environment for them to use and expand their skills in HCI, in social computing, or other information fields. We strongly encourage all SI students to come and explore these career options with us.

Through attendance at regional and national ALA conferences, networking with professionals, and socializing with fellow SI students and other student groups, we seek to make our members feel that they are part of a dynamic professional community.

Providing peer advising, resources about the professional world, and social events enables us all to share the unique knowledge that we each bring to our community. The ALA web page is a great place to keep our collective knowledge and to pass it on to future students. Please help us expand our resources by networking with our del.icio.us bookmarks and commenting on our discussions.

Welcome to ALA@SI!
