ALA Student-to-Staff Program (Deadline: 1/20)

We have a very exciting opportunity to send one of our members to the ALA conference this summer in Anaheim, CA through participation in the ALA Student-to-Staff Program.

ALA will provide free conference registration, housing and a per diem in exchange for a total of 20 hours of work (typically four hours per day) during conference. The student should be available to work on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, June 27-July 1, 2008. Students will receive a short questionnaire to help us match them with appropriate ALA staff. Based on their assignment, students may be expected to perform a range of duties from clerical, to sales, to use of computers.

Note: This does not include travel expenses - but there are many available scholarships that do.

To qualify, the student must be a personal member of ALA - not the student chapter - the real one. So, if you're interested, join now! We have fliers on our bulletin board that will enable you to join the MI chapter for free when you sign up for both at once.

If you are interested, please send your name, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address to eswieri@umich.edu by replying to this message. Please respond by January 20th. We will then have our drawing and announce the candidate on January 21st.

We will draw the name at random from an actual hat. This has been our ongoing tradition and is, we feel, the most equitable way to select from the many qualified candidates from our school.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact our own Jennifer Doty, who was fortunate enough to be selected last year, at jbdoty@umich.edu.

Attending the Annual Conference is a great way to learn about librarianship and to meet colleagues that you will interact with over the course of your career. Many SI students find their first, second, or third jobs through the contacts they meet at these conferences and it is well worth the investment of your time and last remaining dollars.

Good luck!

The ALA Officers
