2009-2010 Student Officers

Meet your current ALA student officers!

As you can see, we represent some of the diverse experiences and interests of the SI community. Feel free to contact us with any questions – we look forward to hearing from you at alaofficers@umich.edu as well as meeting you in person.

President: Anita Shankar

ansh@umich.edu

Background: Anita graduated from another big ten school, the University of Illinois with a double major in Psychology and Speech Communication. She worked at a law firm for two years after graduation and realized she did not want to be a lawyer. She started volunteering at a library and realized where she really belonged. She found library school and the rest is history. While she's not in class or working, Anita can be found watching LOST, jogging/running, or cheering on the Chicago Bears.

Interests: Special Libraries, Online Searching, Research, Content Management, Cataloging, Databases

Internship: Abbott Laboratories Library Information Resources, Abbott Park, IL - Library Intern (May 2009 - August 2009)

Vice-President: Rachel Doepker

rdoepker@umich.edu

Background: Rachel is a Michigan native and got a BS in Psychology from Ferris State University in 2006. After some unsatisfying stints in hotel service and corporate banking, she revisited the idea of graduate school, something she never thought possible. The three very satisfying years spent in circulation and interlibrary loan at the Ferris library during undergrad were just the push she needed to go for grad school gold. In her spare time, she watches too many movies, plays with her two cats, enjoys knitting, baking and board games.

Interests: Academic libraries, Reference, Information Literacy, Outreach, Non-traditional students

Internships: Hatcher Graduate Library, Collection Development Intern (May-August ’09); UM Depression Center, Resource Center Intern (May-August ’09)

Treasurer: Betsy Eggers

bkegge@umich.edu

Background: Betsy graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BA in English and a minor in history. Even though it took her many years to finally graduate she was able to work various odd jobs to perfect her customer service skills -- something very important in the world of the reference librarian. She lives in northwest Ohio with her husband and children.

Interests: Public Libraries, Adult Services, Community Outreach

Internship: Wood County District Public Library, Bowling Green, Ohio - Information Services (May 2009 - August 2009)

Secretary/Webmaster: Heather Backman

heather.backman@gmail.com

Background: Heather grew up in the Boston area, and earned a BA and MA from Stanford University in English literature. Thanks to a mentor in Special Collections, she was able to explore work in archives/rare books, but her work as the student archivist at Stanford's Haas Center for Public Service convinced her that her real calling was in a career that offered more opportunities for direct service and interaction with the public. She is now preparing for a career as a public librarian in adult services. In addition to her involvement in ALA, you can catch Heather knitting, contra dancing, and board gaming.

Interests: Public librarianship, adult services, reference, library programming, libraries as community centers, outreach

Internship: Brookline Public Library, Brookline, MA - Reference Department (Summer 2009)
