All are welcome to join ALA at Ashley's restaurant for an informal happy hour on Tuesday, September 23, from 4-7 pm. Ashley's is located on State Street, right across the street from the Diag, and they offer $1 off drinks during their happy hour. It's a fun bar/restaurant with good food and an enormous selection of draft and bottled beer. This is a social event -come for as long or as little as you'd like, come to talk about libraries and ALA or not -we welcome everyone, regardless of specialization, and are looking forward to meeting some new students! Hope to see you there

Join us for a hot dog barbecue on Monday September 1, 2008, from 2-7pm. Everyone is welcome at this event, which will be held at the Ella Baker Graduate House, on the rooftop. The address for the house in 917 S. Forest Ave., just a short way from campus. ALA will provide hot dogs and pop, and we'd appreciate if you'd be kind enough to bring some other snacks to share. Beer, wine, and other beverage are welcome too. This will be a great time to get to know new students, catch up with old friends, and have a good time before the semester really starts! We hope to see everyone there! If you have any questions, please email the ALA officers at alaofficers@umich.edu. We'd love to hear from you.

We have a very exciting opportunity to send one of our members to the ALA conference this summer in Anaheim, CA through participation in the ALA Student-to-Staff Program.

ALA will provide free conference registration, housing and a per diem in exchange for a total of 20 hours of work (typically four hours per day) during conference. The student should be available to work on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, June 27-July 1, 2008. Students will receive a short questionnaire to help us match them with appropriate ALA staff. Based on their assignment, students may be expected to perform a range of duties from clerical, to sales, to use of computers.

Note: This does not include travel expenses - but there are many available scholarships that do.

To qualify, the student must be a personal member of ALA - not the student chapter - the real one. So, if you're interested, join now! We have fliers on our bulletin board that will enable you to join the MI chapter for free when you sign up for both at once.

If you are interested, please send your name, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address to eswieri@umich.edu by replying to this message. Please respond by January 20th. We will then have our drawing and announce the candidate on January 21st.

We will draw the name at random from an actual hat. This has been our ongoing tradition and is, we feel, the most equitable way to select from the many qualified candidates from our school.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact our own Jennifer Doty, who was fortunate enough to be selected last year, at jbdoty@umich.edu.

Attending the Annual Conference is a great way to learn about librarianship and to meet colleagues that you will interact with over the course of your career. Many SI students find their first, second, or third jobs through the contacts they meet at these conferences and it is well worth the investment of your time and last remaining dollars.

Good luck!

The Instructor College is hosting this event Thurs. Nov. 8th from 10-11am. It would be really helpful if you're interested in getting trained to be an instructional librarian.

Loyd Mbabu, African Studies Librarian, wrote his dissertation on "A content analysis of information literacy courses in master's degree programs of library and information studies." Come and learn about how information literacy is presented to students in a number of Library and Information Studies programs. We will also learn about what the library literature tells us about critical competencies for librarian instructors. After the presentations, participate in a lively discussion about how these findings might inform our own understanding of, and methods of addressing, information literacy issues in the context of our own work.

This Instructor College session will be held in Room 100 Hatcher Graduate Library and is open to all.

For more information: Contact Patricia Yocum, pyocum@umich.edu, 6-3079
