This is one of the weirdest patents I've ever seen. Yes, it was 1891, but I still have trouble understanding how this patent was ever awarded. Near as I can figure out, Elizabeth Dean said she could imagine all kinds of things people might do with eucalyptus and they gave her a patent! Well, perhaps I exaggerate. Judge for yourself.

Since it is so short, it is actually reasonable to transcribe it. Take a look.

A New or Improved Manufacture of Eucalyptus Products for Various Useful Purposes

I, Elizabeth Dean, of Glenthorne, Worple Road, Epsom, in the County of Surrey, Widow, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement: —

It is well known that the Eucalyptus genus of trees possesses valuable antiseptic and medicinal properties, and is supposed to destroy microbes in the atmosphere. It is sometimes called the Fever Tree, as it has been found beneficial in reducing fever when put in the rooms of patients suffering from that disease. I propose to prepare and use the leaves and other parts of Eucalyptus trees, in a convenient manner, so that the above named valuable natural properties may be more conveniently applied for the relief of mankind than has hitherto been done.

My invention consists in applying the leaves, seeds, gums, fibre and other parts of the tree to various articles of common use as follows. The leaves are dried in the sun or by artificial heat, and are then selected cut or wrapped to be used as a substitute for tobacco, for smoking in pipes, or in the form of cigars, or cigarettes. This has been found to be a not unpleasant substitute for tobacco, and — unlike the latter — it leaves a clean and rather pleasant flavour in the mouth. The leaves and fibre may also be used in making the stuffing of beds, mattresses, bolsters, pillows, and the cushions of chairs and sofas. Furthermore, the leaves may be used for fumigating rooms, as a tea or combined with the leaves of the tea plant, or — when ground — used as a snuff, for tooth powder, or combined with the fats employed in making soap and candles.

I propose also to form the gum into lozenges for the throat and chest, and to use it for plasters and poultices. The seed is ground and used with or without ground gum and leaves in making bread, or in other culinary operations.

For any of the above named purposes, the leaves or other products of Eucalyptus may be made up into convenient parcels or packages for ready use.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is: —

A new or improved manufacture of Eucalyptus products, prepared and packed in suitable parcels in the manner and for the purpose herein described.

This 5th day of October 1891.

In the July issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, researchers partially funded through NIDCR may have found the answer. It’s a soft capsule filled with 8 milliliters of strawberry-flavored xylitol syrup. Parents can pull it apart and squeeze the syrup directly into their child’s mouth. In a year-long randomized trial of 94 toddlers whose primary teeth were “coming in,” the researchers found that children who received two capsules a day could prevent up to 70 percent of decayed teeth. They found that the protection against decay was not increased with three capsules per day. The study was conducted in the Micronesian Marshall Islands, where the caries rate is two to three times that of the typical American mainland community. According to the authors, this marks the first time to their knowledge that xylitol has been shown to be “effective for the prevention of decay in primary teeth for toddlers.”

It's got a really cool feature that's becoming more important as the number of articles in Mendeley increases (more than 1 million now). Mendeley provides article-level usage statistics in real time, to create a new kind of impact factor. You can see how often the article is downloaded, shared, and the average reading time.

This patent is interesting in that it shows some of the politics of international patent applications at the time. The actual creative individual in this patent is Daniel O'Connell, who sounds Irish but is living in Berlin. At this time, the Germans were the leaders of the dental profession, so if you were serious about dentistry that was a good place to study. To patent in the Britain (what we think of now as the United Kingdom), he worked through an agent. In this case the agent was the Ash firm. Given that the Ash firm marketed dental chairs, there may be an implication that this innovation was something they were interested in marketing or producing.

Recently, a new version of the UM-MEDSEARCH was released with some useful changes in search history, publication limits, and search fields.

Search History
When you do a search now, you’ll see a new option under Actions. If you click on More, you’ll get a menu that will let you easily delete, save, or create auto-alerts & RSS feeds directly from that search. If your search returns no results, Delete will automatically appear.

Publication Year Limit
It’s now possible to limit your search results by “Last Year”, “Last 2 Years” and so on. Click on the Additional Limits button; you’ll find this new limit set at the bottom of the limits page.

You’ll also notice that there's a box on the left marked Star Ranking. Star Ranking operates only in the Basic Search option and indicates how relevant a particular reference is to the search terms that you entered.

Links to PDFs of Full-text Articles in Citations
When full-text is available at no charge in the database, you’ll see a PDF symbol in the citation record. This is convenient, but don’t forget to click on the MGet It button when you don’t see the PDF symbol—we’ve paid for you to have access to many more journals than are available through the database, and you won’t see the PDF symbol for these articles.

Customizable Search Fields
Now you can create a search using only the specific fields you want. Simply click on Search Fields tab and a new window opens. Choose the fields you want to search (the default is af or “all fields”) by mousing over the field you want to add. Plus/minus signs appear; click on + to add a field or – to delete a field.

I’ve checked 3 fields here, then entered search terms in the search box immediately above (osteonecrosis OR bone cancer AND 2000).

Click on Search (immediately below the search box). Here are the search results, with the fields that I chose indicated in the search (sh, hw, yr).

RefWorks now has a web browser bookmarklet that lets you capture web page data easily. RefGrab-It is installed in your browser, so that you can click on the icon while browsing the web to collect information. RefWorks identifies the title and the URL of web page you’re on, then, in a new window, gives you the option to import the record into your RefWorks account. If an ISBN number, PubMed ID or DOI exist on the web page, RefGrab-It will automatically search various web resources (behind the scenes) to get supplemental information that you can also import, including references and RSS feeds.
Here’s the RefGrab-It icon in my browser window.

Click on the RefGrab-It icon and another page appears.

Click Import to put the record in your library.

Here's another web page. There are 2 tabs, because there’s more information than just that for the web page.

On the Other Info tab, you can see that I can import both references & an RSS feed. Please note: When importing references (not just web page information), you'll only be able to import the same number of references as is selected on the Search Online Databases page in RefWorks (the default is 50 references; for this page, I increased the number to 500).

RefGrab-It can be downloaded from the Tools menu in RefWorks.
