AS UD PD - 6/15
(Alex Stuessy, Update, Professional Development)
Salutations!
PD is moving forward on all fronts, so I will get right to it. I recently received confirmation from Ella Arroyo from Target that they will be our opening speaker for the year on 9/23/09. Although Ella will not be speaking herself, she said that she will let us know who will be speaking on behalf of Target as the date approaches. Regardless we should be very excited to have such a reputable brand as our kick-off. The speakers will be potentially addressing the following:
-Target is known for unparalleled branding: How does branding work on a local level in your experience in comparison with the national
approach?
-Similarly, to what extent does corporate guide/dictate marketing on
the local level? What types of promotions, or interactive initiatives are done in-store?
-What type of community events does Target sponsor on a local level;
what type of out reach programs are occurring right now? Can our
students get involved?
-What types of internships does Target offer; what advice would you give our students to gain a competitive edge? Depending on the speaker we hope to have the representatives collect resumes/cover letters for those interested.
Secondly, Emily Shahady has also confirmed her availability to speak to DEX on 11/11/09. She was a big hit last year and I am personally very excited to have her back again. She is flexible in terms of the content of her speech; these are the ideas we sent to her:
-From your expertise as VP Account Director, tell us how client
management works in an ad agency; what is the process of turning a
lead into an account? How is this relationship maintained and expanded in the future? Can you give us examples in your experience?
-What are positives and negatives of advertising in a poor
economic-climate? Two perspectives: From the account side, is it more
important to gain new clients, or to expand on the services of
existing accounts? From the creative side, what messages/ideologies
are most important?
These are a bit specific, but they are simply "conversation-starters." Also, we will again ask if she will be collecting resumes, and see if she would be willing to speak on Troy's internship program.
Similarly, I have talked with our new co-adviser Lynne Sebille-White who will be providing us with a contact at Google, and hopefully at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. More on this story as it develops.
Lastly, for the hands-on marketing project where we approach a business and actually provide a written plan and course of action for improving their marketing, I agree that those who want to take this on must be fully dedicated. So before we implement anything, we need to feel out interest, and the level of interest.
For potential businesses I feel that the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, Blimpy Burger, Zanzibar, and other localities could be interested. I will draft a better plan outlining prospective businesses after I find out who is interested. On that note, I will be sending out a survey for immediate response.
Well, I have started to ramble, and so I will go back to picking corn out in the fields of South Dakota. Good day.

random: but I was Googling myself as part of my research and this was in the results. It reminded me to comment on your post.
Great job getting some headliner speakers!
If we did do a marketing partnership project, It would be cool to do Blimpy Burger, just because they are very public to the students and what we do could be very visible on campus. Maybe even quickie burger would be interested. I know they've done lots of work with business school project teams, so they are totally open to student involvement.

Target:
Are they going to narrow down their focus? I really like:
-Target is known for unparalleled branding: How does branding work on a local level in your experience in comparison with the national
approach?
And then touch on:
-What types of internships does Target offer; what advice would you give our students to gain a competitive edge? Depending on the speaker we hope to have the representatives collect resumes/cover letters for those interested.
I'm glad Emily is confirmed for 11/11/09! Great job! I am working in the Leo Burnett building right now (Starcom takes up a lot of floor but shares it with Leo Burnett). Is there anything you'd like me to do on my end? Would you like me to meet with a Leo Burnett recruiter to see what internship opportunities can be shared with DEX?
Regarding the hands-on marketing project, I guess we can't move on this until we see if people are actually interested. This would be a huge project that we will probably need a very permanent team for. Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, Blimpy Burger, and Zanzibar are great ideas. I'm looking forward to seeing a more defined plan and survey whenever you have them!
You are doing an amazing job!!!
